My cutting has rooted. What do I do with it? (newbie alert!)

I put some cuttings in a baggied pot in a window a few weeks ago and one seems to be doing well. I think it has rooted and it has some new leaves. I don't know what to do with it. Do I put it in a larger pot with potting soil? Mix perlite in? And then gradually move it to a sunny outdoor spot? I'm in zone ~10 (SF Bay area).

I can't put it in the ground because we're about to have the yard landscaped. (I've been saying that for a while!)

I don't know what the rose is--I had to move it from the spot it had been in for 50+ years for a remodeling project and it's been sitting in a stock tank for a few years. It started to go downhill so I thought I'd better start learning to propagate. Many techniques are described online for getting cuttings started, but they don't tell you what to do next!

In my limited experience, new leaves sprout and grow long before there are any significant roots. I'd put it in dappled shade outside but probably not repot until you can see roots growing from the bottom of the pot. I've lost many cuttings because of impatience. What soil are you growing in? I'm in your same area and have the best luck with cuttings grown in the ground over winter in a mostly shady spot but with just a little sun.

cynqueen - Yahoooooo! Isn't it a great feeling to see your first sprouts?! This is my 3rd year and I still get a thrill from seeing the new ones every day. Leave your lids on! If you have to, throw a sheet over them if you happen to get a really warm day and they're in full sun. We have more than a few nights coming that will still be below freezing! I usually starting taking tops off when the days are consistenetly in the upper 70's and the nights are in the upper 40s and lower 50s. I have never had "drying out" problems as we usually get more than enough rain during this time of year. Once the tops are off, they dry out much faster and that's when you have to start worrying about watering them, which can be a big hassle!

That's why I don't root mine this way - same thing happened to me. I would probably leave it in the bag until you get more roots lower on the stem. Denise in Omaha

It's never to late to plant hydrangeas. Just plant the new cuttings in the ground, in light shade, mulch it and keep it well watered and watch it grow!

I tried the alcohol and they didn't come off. Maybe it is damage from the sun. It's been extremely hot lately and the rose lost most of its leaves. I moved the rose today to a better location. It used to be in front of my house, where shade cloth is not allowed by my HOA. Hopefully, it will leaf out again. Thank you all for your help. If I ever do see scale, I'll know what to do :) Irisgal, I'm not sure why the new cane has such small thorns below, but there are larger ones further up.

Thanks! I'll keep waiting. It's in a mix of some kind of bagged potting soil and perlite. I worry that if I put it outside it will be forgotten. :)

Then just leave it where it is but make sure it will not get a lot of hot sun and keep it watered but not soggy. If the original plant is still alive you might want to put some more cuttings in the ground. I have found that in ground rooting is the best way to avoid the problem of the cuttings rotting because of too much water.
