We have a lot of Spanish named towns in Californìa. It is interesting how people from other parts of the country pronounce the names. My mom never did get San Jose right. Called it San 'Josie' instead of San 'Hoze'. The one DH and I get a laugh out of every time we drive by is Los Banos. Los means 'The' and Banos means 'Toliets'.

We have a lot of French place names in Newfoundland, for example "Isle aux Morts" which literally translates to "Island of the Dead". Then there is "Bay d'Espoir", which translates to "Bay of Hope". However, everyone here pronounces it "Bay Despair", basically the opposite of what it means.

And one of my favourite street names here in the city is "Hill of Chips".

In my town alone we have "Hole in the Wall Road" and "Katie's Crotch Road"!

caflower, baños also means baths (like a bathhouse, casa de baños), which is how I've thought of the name. Los Baños is in a low part of the valley and there are many ponds and small lakes right there.

There's a little hamlet outside of my city called Punkeydoodles Corner. The name always makes me smile.

Climax, MI

A relative told me we have ancestors buried at Merryall in PA. Puzzling name for a cemetery, yes? Turns out, that's the name of the town. It's near Wyoming, PA. Now I'm wondering about how the State of Wyoming got its name!

Texas also has Mule Shoe and Dime Box. I know there are a lot more, but those are the only two that come to mind right now. We have a lot of Hispanic named towns, too. The pronunciation of 'Nacogdoches' trips up lots of visitors here.

Are you in Illinois? My son went to a huge concert in Cave In Rock a few years back. He drove my motorhome from Alberta, down the corner of Saskatchewan before crossing into the US and driving east until he hit this place. He said it was the best vacation ever!

In Alberta we have Medicine Hat and Red Deer. Saskatchewan has Moose Jaw. And there's even a town on the east coast called Dildo. Seriously. Look it up... ;) I guess it's the Newfie humour. lol

I visited that park on a high school biology field trip.

Near me in Virginia I've seen a sign for "Cave Mountain Lake Forest" which seems more like a list of generic geological features than a specific name for a place.

Elsewhere near here there is Bumpass, which I think is supposed to be pronounced Bum-pass but I think of it as Bump-ass.

Back when PC stores were start-ups, the street in an industrial park near Oshkosh, WI that fronted a PC store was named Disc Drive.

A sign in front of a dental extraction specialist in Milwaukee read," Dr.s Peck and Huerty". Yes it was real. I was referred to that place for a wisdom tooth extraction.

A road leading into a marsh in SE Wisc is "Frog Alley Rd". (I have a photo of it. I did not post it because it would take too much time to locate it.)

There is a rural road NW of Franklin, NC, called "Two Barn Road".

A lake NW of Oshkosh, WI is called Butte des Morts (French for "Bluff of the Dead") Its a wide spot on the Fox river that dumps into Lake Winnebago.

Fond du Lac, WI (French for "Bottom of the Lake". Fond du Lac is at the south end of Lake Winnebago.

Another fun place name in Alabama is Phil Campbell. Every once in awhile there is a gathering of people named Phil Campbell who unite and stare at each other for a day or two. After a bad tornado hit, Phils from around the globe came together to assist in cleanup and rebuilding efforts.

Moyamensing Avenue in South Philly comes from the Lenni Lenape word for 'pigeon droppings' - my kids called it Pigeon Sh*t Street.

Frog Level, Virginia -- it's flat and swampy.

There's a street in Houston area named Butte Creek. I always think how unfortunate to be up Butte Creek with out a paddle lol. I have a tendency to remove the e.

A butte is a geological feature, a flat topped hill. Like a mesa.

It's not "butt" but rather think of the word beautiful and drop the iful.

Or, if easier, byout. Same vowel sound as "you"

Not too strange but one area in my city is called Sandwich and we have 2 street corners that merge Sandwich and Chewitt which always makes me laugh

We always giggle when the weather people mention Bowlegs during storms.

Decades ago remember reading an article about Rand McNally's map makers were challenged with how to print the names of some little towns. One, for which they did not give the original name, they printed as Naughty Lady. I forgot the other examples.

I live in east Texas, which has its share of funny sounding towns. I'm near Gun Barrel City. There's also Ben Wheeler, Ding Dong, Loco, Telephone, Weeping Mary, Bug Tusle and Nameless. People get tongues tangled with Bexar, Mexia and Anahuac.

I worked in a town called Fuquay-Varina. Not so odd, it's named after some people. But nobody from outside the area is willing to try to pronounce it! (It's pronounced "few-kway").

There is a street in a neighboring town called Yubinaranda Circle. Say it out loud. And it's not a circle.

I went on vacation last year to BroadKill beach in Delaware...near Slaughter beach.

Isn't Gobbler's Knob where the groundhog Punxatawny Phil lives? We have a town called Issue, because the residents didn't want to change the postal name, so it was at Issue...

Not nearby but there is a Weed, California.
We also have a small town named Cool, California.
Of course Folsom Prison is in Folsom,CA.
