Comments (5)i beg to differ with picea on terminology .... dwarf plants will outgrown the area within 5 to 10 years.... look for MINI conifers ... the difference is the annual growth rate .... hit the link to the ACS ... and read up on the tutorials [especially the Intro to conifers]... and general information ... you have many options.. if you go the mail order route ... you will not find a lot of stuff locally .. unless you are real lucky .... tell us .. specifically .. where you are.. and maybe we can lead you to suppliers .... a lot of them are out in OR .... below are 3 pix ... of areas where there are MANY MINI's in confined spaces ... try to ignore the hail .... and ignore the dwarf .. he will outgrow the space also .... ken Here is a link that might be useful: intro to conifers...See MoreISO native narrow evergreen bush/tree
Comments (3)You are limiting yourself unnecessarily if you are looking only for natives that are both narrow and evergreen. About the only one I can think of is a selection of any one of a number of cultivars of American arborvitae, Thuja occidentalis. And these not all that happy in so much shade. Other possibility might be a Rhododendron, but a more suitable choice would be one of the hybrids rather than a native species. Is there an overriding need to stick solely to natives? A great many non-native plants are extremely well suited to gardens without upsetting the ecological balance :-)) And if one really wants to stick to pure natives, then they should be limited to plants that only grow naturally in one's immediate area - an even more limited selection....See MoreIs there a narrow tree that's shorter than 10 feet?
Comments (51)pjtexgirl - I just had to share this story with you. I remembered you saying boxwoods smell bad, so I sniffed one when I was at Lowes one day and couldn't smell anything. I was at Callways last week and they had the Green Tower Boxwood, so I bought it to go next to my front door. The longer I drove around with it in my car, the more my car started to stink. I recognized the smell instantly. I used to have this neighbor and I noticed that smell every time I walked up to their front door. It smelled like a musty smell to me and I always assumed that maybe they had some water damage in their house at one time and the smell never went away. Needless to say, I took the shrub back a couple of days later. My mother was in the car with me when I took it back and her first thought was that it smelled like cat litter and I remembered you saying it smelled like cat urine. No more boxwoods for me!!...See MoreNeed help with evergreen (X-posted tree forum)
Comments (12)hey oly ... seeing the first pic above.. and all that potential... one might think your are planted a LITTLE to close to the house ... or are your some named cultivar ... OP really should not be planting the species ... short of a mountain to plant them on ... dont you think ... so OP .. original poster.. ought to take the first two latin names.. and look for dwarf or mini versions ... the lasiocarpa i have are all self forming thick xmas tree shaped plants.. and near bullet proof in my MI ... so i can recommend any cultivars myself ... ken...See More- 6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoUser thanked Dave in NoVA • N.
