Yellow leaves on Astrantia

First time growing them, they are in constantly moist soil, full of compost (leafgro) and though I planted just small bare root plants late winter, they've been up, seemingly thriving, and blooming for a month. Suddeonly last week several leaves turned yellow. Could it have been the unreasonable week of 80-90 degree days, nitrogen or other nutrient deficiency, or something else? (No black spots came before the yellow leaves.)

HA! During WWI, for the war effort, my great great great grandmother would get permission to cordon off short sections of paved streets, on which she scattered rubber bands of varying diameter. Under her miraculous care, within days the rubber bands grew into trees so laden with tires for various types of military vehicles that often she and the neighbors couldn't harvest them all before they became larger than intended; this, necessitating that they be trimmed back to a usable size. She would then have the trimmings ground into powder, which she mixed with white milk. When the slurry of rubber and milk was heated under pressure in small molds (like sinker molds or toy soldier molds, if you've ever made either from lead), the result was Ficus elastica seeds which were sold to tree farmers all over the world and served as the propagules for essentially every rubber tree plantation currently in existence. I sure do miss that lovely and determined old gal. ....... at her 100th in 1966: She sure was something. Sad that we have to wait until next summer to see her again. Michelin has kept her so busy at headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand, France for the last 49 years, she hasn't been able to get back to the states to see ANY of her great, great, great, great grandchildren. What did you use for the Aphids? Leaves turn yellow, exhibit chlorosis, for many reasons and sometimes people spray inappropriate things on plants to eliminate Aphids that cause the plants leaves to die, which yours are doing. If something was sprayed on those leaves that restricted that leafs ability to breath or photosynthesize the plant will cut off nutrient flow to that leaf and it will die.

You could try and prune it to a smaller size maybe if you wish to keep it in a smaller pot, my key lime is quite small and it went through several flowering cycles this year. Citrus are heavy feeders so providing enough nutrients is key. I use granular citrus fertilizer on a monthly basis just topdress the soil, and when my plants are fruiting and flowering I use a water soluble fertilizer weekly. They also make water soluble citrus nutrients which can be diluted and sprayed on the leaves. I prefer to apply smaller amounts of nutrients more often. Also I recommend using organic fertilizer, non organic fertilizer will lead to salt build up in the pot. The picture is the kinds of fertilizer I use. Some of the marks look like mechanical damage. I would not worry too much at this moment. Not sure you need to change the water weekly, guess is doesn't matter either. Try using water at room temperature. I am not sure what you mean by RO water. What you don't want is city tap water which has chemicals added to it, hard water from a well is not the best but should not be too bad if it is not depositing mineral scale, but do not use softened water as it has salt in it. If you get algae in the water, use a dark colored container to block light into the water.

Thanks for the photo. I don't know for sure, but I tend to think that it may be a combination of not-too-developed root systems and the sudden heat. It doesn't seem that the newer leaves have issues, just the older ones, so I would tend to doubt that it's a nutrients issue, and added fertilizer may add to the stress. I would most likely try to give these a fair amount of temporary shade in the hottest part of the day if they aren't already shaded then. Depending on how hot your area gets in summers, this sounds like a plant that might struggle a bit. Here's Missouri Botanical Garden's page on Astrantia.

These look a bit stressed. I would be inclined to follow Bab's advice with some shade (as the sudden temperature change can certainly cause the leaves to yellow) and also consider removing the flower heads as there looks like only a tiny bit of foliage to support blooming. More buds will form later in the season but it gives the plant a chance to recover it's equilibrium. Over watering can also cause yellowing. Are you on clay? or sandy soil?

They are on what was very sandy soil, with lots of compost mixed in. Nearly pure sand starts about a foot below the soil line. They are kept constantly moist from occasional spray from a small waterfall to the adjacent little fish pond, but with such sharp drainage I don't think moisture is a problem. It may be too much sun, and stress from blooming so much for such a small plant, as you suggested. (I knew I was pushing the envelope here with them, as our summers here are probably too hot for astrantia, but since we're about 1/4 mile from the beach, we do get much cooler breezes most evenings than homes even a short distance further inland.)
