Well I cut them back...what do you think?

A few weeks back I inquired as to what these were (sprirea?) and noted they had not been filling in the last few years. It was suggested I cut them back. I did so today...a little late but it was as soon as I could. Are they cut back far enough? How long till they again fill in to the point where they look as they once did..one continuous shrub?

I trim mine back more than that but I only do mine every other year so have to make it good. This year I pruned them in early April and they're about eighteen inches tall now.

To my way of thinking the goal is to open them up for air flow and so the sun can penetrate as well as controlling size- I'm not fond of "shearing" where all one does is shape the outside of the plant while leaving great wads of tangled branches within. I like to get in there at the base and try to direct future growth with
my pruning cuts to make each year easier. But I will tell you that I have so many spirea that I often get frustrated and just hack them down- spirea
are very forgiving. But I still do it in a 'pruning mode' not a 'shearing mode.'

Every year your pruning skills will increase and bit by bit you can get them back into shape. We bought this place in '07, moved and divided all the spirea that fall, and in a couple of years they looked well established again.

just like your tree question.. where a giant stub was left ... you left a lot of dead stubs on these ... but hey.. we were all new at it.. back in the day ... good first try ...

give them a week or 3 ... to see how they rebud ... and before that growth gets to long.. trim back any dead spikes you left ... just clean it up a bit ..

'Sombreuil' has been a tough and reliable rose for me in coastal zone 6 for the last 8 years. Last winter it had no die back at all. It makes a rather stiff and thorny plant that is hard to train along a low fence. I have it on a 4' picket fence and it is just too low. In my zone it would be much better as a pillar or trellised against a wall. The flowers are very double and come is sprays that open over an extended period. It blooms several times throughout the summer and the constant new growth ensures that even if it drops some leaves there are always new ones on the way. I have this rose in a very prominent place as it is a favorite. 'Compte de Chamborde' is one of the most charming of the OGRs and deserves a place in any garden devoted to them. My fourteen year old own root plant is still small with thin wiry canes to a couple of feet, but it does acceptably well in a mixed border of iris, catmint, and daylilies and is at its most charming when surrounded by the tiny daisy like flowers of feverfew.

Yes, GE Cafe matches much better, but having compared them side by side, the Samsung is much nicer and seems sturdier. Gets much better reviews as well. Samsung is at least a closer look than the Kitchen Aid fridge I first looked at. . . As for Bosch, I like the size of KA better, gets solid reviews, liked it in the store, and use one now that is terrific. Thanks!

Well, I'm not sure my DH will move the tv due to it's mounted on the wall and if we put it into the corner where do all the components go? We have too much in there, that's my feeling. Too much w/too little wallspace. Plus the sofa/chair are too big for the room. I'm not really feeling the added wall, either. With or without the pass-thru OR just a pony wall. I think it will make the room seem small. I'm trying to fit a round peg into a square hole w/this situation I think. Even building a wall isn't really the answer plus I know my husband doesn't really want to do it. I feel like giving up. Thanks for reading along and offering suggestions, but I'm going to stop thinking about it for now. Maybe I'll re-post when/if I have a new inspiration.

Window treatments can be such a pain to get right. Struggling to block the sun in my den as well so I feel your pain. :) Your curtains are beautiful. I'd have to see the whole room to form an opinion on the whole look but I can share my preference for length. I like them when they barely kiss the floor and that's because I find them a pain otherwise when I'm vacuuming. Not usually a fan of tied back curtains but YMMV. It's your home. Try it out and if you like how it looks and it works for you, do it.
