Moving a large hydrangea tree
Comments (3)Prepare planting hole in advance. For 10' high hydrangea it should be in 4.5-5' wide range. Water it well for couple of days before moving and water, water, water after it had been moved. If you don't mind same extra handwork and have at least two weeks before move-day, you may rootprune it right now. Good luck!...See MoreAnnabelle Hydrangea
Comments (4)I grow Golden Sunlight, Nikko Blue, Mme Emile Mouillère, Oakleaf and a few others but no Annabelle. I almost got one at Home Depot Landscape last Sunday though. It will probably do well here; you just have to mulch it heavily, about 3 inches worth of mulch, and water it, water it, water it. If you can, select a place that is not windy and where a mature-size plant would get no sun after 10am-11am. It will be ok for it to wilt somewhat during the heat of the summer but it should recover once the sun has gone down. This problem will probably occur often on its first year and during the summer. In the mornings, I set the drip irrigation for one-hour three times a week at the height of the summer; if things sizzle or we have wind advisories, I may add an extra 30min cycle. I just have to play it by ear and manually check the soil of the hydrangeas, gardenias and azaleas. During the plant's first year, make a habit of cking up on it to learn how it behaves in your surroundings, just as you would do with any other new plants. You will be amazed how many times I discover some wilting and go 'what happened?' Also, during our winters, the plant will still need some water so plan on watering it albeit less than you are doing now. Yes, the plant will be dormant but the roots will still be growing. When the plant goes dormant this winter, consider adding some wire fences to help it hold those big blooms after it rains. Also, expct the blooms not to last long if you expose the plant to a lot of sun during the summer. Good luck, Luis...See MoreBest time to move Annabelle hydrangea
Comments (3)Doesn't matter. I love the dried flower heads on the plant over winter, I find it a lovely effect, but the choice is yours. Try to get her moved the earlier part of October to give her a good 6 weeks or so to settle in and get a bit established before the weather turns colder....See Morehelp?! I have to transplant an Annabelle hydrangea
Comments (1)The plant will establish itself more quickly, and suffer less shock, if you take off the flowers. You can always dry them for the winter! I'd also cut the plant down to a manageable size, not only for your sake but also to keep it from wilting (you can use WiltPruf to help with this, too). Get as much of the root as possible and water it well until it is dormant. If your others are thriving in full sun, there's no reason this one won't. Good luck....See Morebella rosa
