How do you Choose/Buy Your daylilies?
Comments (38)Probably at least 1000 daylilies have come and gone over the years. I've been growing daylilies seriously since the late 90's and have had an AHS Display Garden since around 2000. The garden now has under 700 registered cultivars and I hope to move 50 more out before next summer's regional tour here. No more new ones will come into the garden between now and then if I can help it!(I've seen way too many gardens on Regional and National tours where the people went out and bought a bunch of new plants the year before the tour and they grew mostly little SF and DF on the tours with very sparse blooms showing. People walk right past those and go to look at the clumps!) Almost all plants here have come directly from the hybridizers. I've learned that plants hybridized in my home Region 3 and adjacent regions ( 2 and 4 esp.) do best here. Although I used to heavily buy from the Florida hybridizers, many of those plants seem to be more and more tender anymore as many of them continue to breed evergreen to evergreen over the years. The garden has really evolved from what used to be a mainly full formed bagel garden, mostly Southern hybridized, to a garden featuring a wide variety of all types of plants,a huge collection of UFs and spiders, several miniature beds, some doubles and a share of full forms. As I downsize, what I like best is that the large clumps are spaced better and there is room to interplant more companion plants. Even when the daylilies finish blooming, there will still be a lot of blooms here. Anyone starting out should try to see a lot of local gardens and note what grows well in those gardens. A good resource is to check the AHS listing of Display Gardens in your Region. See the link below: Here is a link that might be useful: AHS Display Gardens...See MoreHow do you clean your stainless appliances?
Comments (22)I tried alot of different products with not much success. I really sorta hated my new stainless appliances...I'm not one to do a great deal of cleaning so I couldn't believe the maintenance with these darn things. Anyway, I think it is important on these threads to mention the brand of appliances you have. Even though it's all stainless steel, I do think they are different. I have all GE Profile appliances. The product that has worked best for me is the Weiman spray. I get it at Wal Mart. Spray it on a cloth and wipe. And I agree with Boxerpups, the Weiman SS wipes do not work as well. Unfortunately, you are probably going to have to try a few products till you find the one that works best for YOUR appliances....See Morehow do you buy your cabinets
Comments (6)Anyone embarking on a remodel with 60K worth of cabinets and the structural issues you have needs both a good General Contractor and a Kitchen Designer. Occasionally you can find either a GC or KD who could take on the task of overseeing the whole job, but most often their skill sets complement each other rather than having one person have the whole responsibility. Either the GC or KD will have connections with some cabinet firms that they are comfortable working with. You should already have an idea of the look you're going for, and there are many many cabinet lines that can give you a nice cabinet and a certain look with different quality points. Let your KD or GC guide you in selecting a line that will work for your budget as well as work in the space that you have. Don't lock yourself into a certain line unless they really have something that is not reproducible in any other line, and that would be rare. Ask family and friends and neighbors who have had work done for recommendations for a contractor. Go to some local supply houses and ask who they would recommend. Post your current space layout here and get some feedback. Having an idea of which boxes should go where in your kitchen is only about 20% of a good kitchen design. There are literally hundreds of other details that need to be handled, and at the price point you are in, the services of a professional KD will be especially invaluable to you. Do more research than you ever though possible before signing off on anything and be sure you have your specs for the job written out well before you begin. Most often, cost overruns occur because homeowners haven't made all the material decisions, or a not so good surprise behind the walls is found. Have at least 20% over your target budget in reserve for just those surprises or splurges....See MoreWhere do you guys buy a refrigerator for your house?
Comments (7)I used to buy my appliances at an employee-owned local chain (4 stores across our state) but they were a casualty of the credit crunch five years ago. When I bought my current fridge three years ago, I did pretty much the same thing attofarad did except that I didn't use a Lowe's card. However, like Jaz50y, I did my research and was able to wait for holiday weekend sale where Lowe's had a KitchenAid FD model as an overstock that Lowes was offering at 40% off. These tactics are fine if you can choose when to buy but not much help when you need a new fridge ASAP. I'm too far out in the boonies and too paranoid to be comfortable buying a large appliance from most on-line vendors whose "fine-print" restocking policies give me the willies. I just assume that if something can go wrong with a sale, it will happen to me. For me, Costco.com is the only exception. (I got my current stove from them.) For me, Costco is the only exception s because of (a) Costco's an absolute satisfaction guarantee which means I can take the appiiance back to them for a full refund rather than having to mess with endless delays in warranty service (can you tell I'm paranoid?); and (b) I've got a truck and equipment that makes it easy for me to haul a defective appliance to get a refund at the local Costco warehouse store. Plus, there are membership rebates and, if you have or use a Costco Amex card, they extend the basic warranty by a year. Offsetting those considerations, the Costco selection is limited (basically Whirlpool/Maytag and LG) and they will not ship to some states and won't ship to some mountain and rural areas (which is most of the state I live in.)...See MoreJoseph Futral
