What did I do wrong to my Zucchini?
Comments (6)I've had volunteer squash try to grow in unprepared clay soil and become stunted. Is your top soil a pretty good depth? The leaves on the plant look healthy but kind of light... So the plant may just need to be fed.. It don't know if it's just the picture though....See More18 plants 4 blooms. What am I doing wrong?
Comments (17)I'm glad you enjoyed a virtual tour, Jasmine. I hope to get a chance to take images of the rest of this season's varieties before first frost... may or may not happen. I feel the same way when I wander through gardens of master growers. So much more dedication then I have. Here's a shot I took at the garden that produces the Windhaven varieties... (sorry for the lousy images) Each one of those blooms could be cut with two sets of leaves, and are optimized for the maximum petal count. He waters a bit every day, with a liquid fertilizer siphoned into the water supply. The umbrellas provide protection from sun fading and water spots on the blooms. This gentleman knows his stuff, and is one of the masters I am constantly pestering with questions....See MoreMy plants are dying? What am I doing wrong?
Comments (6)A few hours of LED light each day is clearly not enough replacement for plants (like echeverias) that crave full to shaded sunlight. Mine winter with grow lights up to 8-10 hours a day on a timer, even that is not enough to replace what natural sunlight provides. I set them about 2-3 inches from the actual light bulb, so if you can, adjust your lamp closer to the plants. If you are worried about overwatering, get a small fan to ventilate, and make sure the water doesn't sit in the bottom. Plants wise, your plants are looking fine. As crenda mentioned, flowers wilt and dry away. The most important things to keep watch are how the leaves grow. Healthy roots and leaves = healthy plants....See MoreWhat is wrong with my zucchini plants?
Comments (4)The zippering (beige lines) on the stems and the leaf edema (puffiness on the leaves) is usually a sign of excessive watering or heavy rains that keep the soil overly wet. When exposed to excess water the plant simply cannot keep up with normal transpiration (what we'd call sweating) so the leaves develop puffy swollen areas, the cells rupture and die and brown patches form where the cells die. The stems will swell and then split and then scab over as in your picture. So the question becomes have there been excessive heavy rainfalls, poorly drianing soil, or is it possible you have been way over-watering the plants? Dave...See Morelnm2016
