Comments (6)Thanks Carol, I did attempt to start some cardinal flowers from seed..but not anywhere near there. I just googled & checked it out on Dave's and it doesn't seem like it's lobelia to me? I looked at a few even though the only kind I had was the red cardinal. Uh-Oh, Judging by how the young lobelia plants look, I may have pulled the ones from the seeds I started..they really look like weeds, lol. I added the link to the page, if you'd care to look. Anyone else have any ideas? Comments (20)Ohhh I see Malaysia is a bit different from me When #4 was in flowering for me Sun time here at longest is about 15.75 hours buds where easy to see and nearly ready to open and did so with lesser sun light time and finished flowering 12 days later. Temps where in the 80 - 92 F range at the same sun times mentioned and the time of day mine opened was 16:00 hours to 23:00 hours For now I can say your heaviest rain season might be a bit much for #4 although the soil you have it in does look nice enough to drain fast enough. Again odd #4 Messeb like water more than most succulents but doesn't like wet roots for to long of time in days the top will rot out on you if to wet to long. Your other plants would certainly benefit with a lot less water than #4 can handle Other than a season rain over watering concern I have think you'll do very well with yours. As caution I think it would be best if you could provide a tarp or tent for some over head covering during your heavy tropical rain season over the entire garden bed. I and others here appreciate you and want to see your plants in there best of flowering later too. Comments (3)The glads and the cannas will tend to work their way back toward the top of the soil with time, in my experience, so planting them as deeply as you can - well, the cannas should be about 2-3" deep, and the glads 3-6" deep - and then mulching well over the bulbs/tubers will help them survive. I find that I need to replant the glads every once in a while, or I put them behind plants they can lean on, otherwise, they get top-heavy and lie over in flower. Cannas can take moister soil than the glads, though also will grow in dryish places - they WILL multiply and spread out if they are happy! For the bearded iris, they WANT to be almost on top of the soil, so the tubers get a good baking in the summer. I find digging a hole and then making a narrow mound of soil in the middle to "perch" the main root on top of, with the lesser roots hanging down, helps stabilize them in place. You can also make pins of cut-up wire coat-hangers, and pin them so they stay right-side up, once the hole is filled in - the leaves can make the tubers unstable. Any of the slow-acting fertilizers meant for bulbs/flowers will help if added to the soil, if you add it to the entire area as you break up the soil; you can put down more in the spring when you see green leaves. SOME nitrogen is good, but not lots - you want flowers, not lot of leaves - so be careful with using lawn fertilizer - in fact, don't! Do mark where you plant them - it is SO frustrating to think you have a great "empty" spot, start to dig, and dig up thriving bulbs which were entirely underground at that point! You CAN over-plant the glads, but the cannas and the iris will need plenty of room next summer....See MoreHelp with Succulent ID-ing please?
Comments (27)A possibility for you on that 2nd one in the last bunch: Aeonium sedifolium (which was my first thought, but I nixed it, as your plant's leaves are not so plump as I would think it to have...but it does have the tannic stripes/coloring). Still, I would not say this is IT. :P Would like to see its blooms, if/when it does. =) Adding a link to a pic of one, but not sure GW allows this site when linking (we shall see). Okay, it would not, because of spam or other. This site also has other pix of this plant that look more like how I believe it should look. Also, I don't find this site has correct labeling of their plants, so don't fully trust them. So, google image this name. Maybe I'll email you the name of site!
