HELP for shrubs that have budded early and freeze coming
Comments (6)Go back inside, make yourself a nice cup of tea, start a fire in the fireplace if you have one, sit down and read a good book. Forget about the garden. Forget about the freeze. Whatever you do, don't run around trying to 'help'. Our last frost date is May 30th. Even in a normal year, practically everything is leafed out before the last frost. Everything that people would usually call a spring flower is flowering before the last frost. They can handle it. If they couldn't they wouldn't be growing and blooming now. If you want to worry, the temperatures you should be concerned about are if it gets into the low 20's. That is cold enough to cause damage, and it is early enough that those temperatures are not out of the question....See MoreIris from CT Spring 2005 or Fall 2004 swap
Comments (2)That may be it, Dee, I seem to remember the name Royal Knight but the plant marker is missing from the bed. Comments (18)I wish mine would take over my whole yard! I just love them. I had nothing here when I moved to this house in Houston from my Plano house, which had lots of flowers and plants. A wonderful lady from the gw forums wanted to thank me for helping her with her computer problems and sent me a box of several incredibly beautiful iris and daylilly bulbs. Thanks to her generosity I now have those beauties blooming in my garden, and more. I still don't have much but I have been adding more each year. A few neighbors and members of our garden club have also shared from their garden. Our garden club has a yard sale each year around Easter, we sell plants, home baked goods, and this year we have been making lots of beautiful crafts to sell. We donate the majority of the money to very worthy charities, and use a little to take bus trips to garden centers and places of interest. Great fun! And slowly my garden is growing, this Texas heat is not helping....See MoreNewly budded oaks Metasequoias and freeze
Comments (4)Should be fine. I have all my subtropicals out (here in Zone 7ish/NJ). Our lows are forecast to also be in your range, with colder not that far. Metasequoia? One of mine was absolute blasted a few years ago...not by cold, but by 90's heat in April (with wind). Here, the nearby ocean chill means that they have not begun to leaf out out yet, so not an issue. DURATION of cold matters too, and this time of year means that the freaky cold will not be of extended duration. Good luck!...See MoreUser
