Do you have/like Crasulla, 'Jades? Pictures please
Comments (118)Nifty, Josh! I like it! You really must get great light to grow and bloom such nice plants! The light here is much weaker during certain times throughout the year, and it shows in my growing. I have definitely found that the medium I use allows for much more evenly spread root growth down inside the containers. Except for that one orchid, the roots don't come toward the surface or circle the walls, anymore. It's really a neat concept! I may have seen the same three legged planter at a garage sale or two over the years, but they weren't in such great condition. Yours appears to be very nice, Laura... mine has a wobbly leg or two from age, I think. It just made me smile to see another one! Yes, lovely Jades, everyone! I do believe I killed my last one with kindness....See Moreholy smoke! new online rose vendor
Comments (69)I'm glad to hear that. I kept asking about other roses vs. Helene and every time Cliff said that Helene was better. I was very happy he had one left for me. I'll have to order from him again next spring to get Gardens of the World and a few others on my wish list. Everyone who ordered should be sure to post some pics of theirs this summer so I have a nice long list next time....See MoreJade, jades, jades, anyone?
Comments (128)Thanks for all the pictures. Are you satisfied as-is or do you have plans for pruning/directing growth? I'm not saying it needs change, it is beautifully shaped as-is. Just wondering what your plans are. It would be brash indeed to insist this go into a gritty mix since it has done so well in its current soil. Caution is definitely worth repeating however. If a person waters appropriately the plant can thrive in a water-retentive soil. The problem comes in when someone waters frequently, waters some more as the answer to all plant problems, and waters still some more to fulfill some nurturing tendency(that'd be me). The soil then tends to stay soggy, and the plant spends a lot of energy repairing and replacing waterlogged roots instead of growing. If this continues the plant is at risk to be overwhelmed with root rot and death. At that point there are not enough roots to use the water, and the soil is destined to stay soggy until the haggard plant is rescued, or it simply gives up the ghost. With an appropriate gritty mix, the waterlogged condition never occurs, thus it is safer for the novice/casual grower, though under watering can slow plant growth too. (With a quicker wet-dry cycle in a gritty mix, faster root growth can occur and subsequently faster plant growth. Another advantage.) I was trying to talk water, but in the process got very long-WINDED. Stopping now. ez...See MoreIs this a Crassula 'Gollum' or 'Hobbit' or something else?
Comments (40)Haha you LOTR nerds! Just kidding, I'm a fan too..but honestly I'm more a fan of Star Wars! One day I will name a variety 'R2D2' :P On the subject of jades, I just had a cool idea today! My roommate is always trying to get me to drink coffee from his Keurig coffee maker. He showed me the little cup of ground coffee after it was done brewing, and I realized that it would be perfect for a small plant! The little cups are about 1 inch in diameter, have a coffee filter secured in with about 1 centimeter of empty space below the filter (water can drain through) with a hole already punched in the bottom! I filled them up and put my jade leaves in there to grow. He drinks a lot of coffee so I should have more pots soon to put lots of cuttings in! I am afraid the coffee filter will rip at some point, but I wasn't able to poke my finger through it so it is pretty strong. Does anyone else use this kind of coffee maker? Check out the coffee container next time you make a brew. -Chris...See Morebunkfree_4a_canada
