I noticed that too. Mine is not in full bloom now, but is doing wonderfully (thanks again!). Nice to see another of Jack's roses back in commerce.

I'm delighted to see the Lens roses available. I have been regretting not buying every Lens that Hortico imported about a decade ago, but they were in that catalog as numbers only and my passion for cluster flowered roses was in the beginning stages.
(And that list of species roses is going to merit some book work later tonight.)
I have bought from Cliff and the roses came cross country as healthy as anyone could ask for.

Beth, Quaker Star caught my attention. Is it wonderful?

Carla -- I have as it happens lived with Quaker Star for a good month, in preparation for a silent auction.
Orange roses are not my cuppa tea, but I noticed something about QS which I liked very much.
As the bloom faded, it did not (as many oranges do) turn the color of a very old, faded football.
Rather, the petal edges quilled, and deepened to an intense deep red-orange.
EVEN EYE found it attractive!

How's this for good news;
Just got an email saying my roses will ship on Tuesday. That means it took less than a week from ordering to shipping. Outstanding! I'll post a pic when they arrive.

Mike, yeah! I just received an email from Cliff saying my roses will ship then also. Needless to say I ordered Iced Ginger. I wanted to let you know he does not have many left. But now that I know you made an order already may I ask what you got for yourself?

I bought the one due to the fact that I'm out of room and have been officially warned not to buy any more roses by my husband:) What's more I went out to check on my ailing Angel Face this morning (that I thought Iced Ginger would replace) and it was looking really good. So that shot my only excuse for buying the new rose. I do have a little room in my front rose bed so might put IG there.

I felt very attend to by Cliff. Good customer service.

Oh you guys have to get ICED GINGER. Mine is over 10yrs old and averages a good 5-6ft; blooms well and fairly frequently.

Carla, it's been so many yrs since I had my old QUAKER STAR, I can't remember how it was, except that the color was quite lovely, and had interesting form.

Beth those are amazing! I was hoping someone might post who had experience with Iced Ginger. If I hear any huffing and puffing from my husband about buying this rose I'm going to bring up your pictures.

I havent' been online lately for various reasons a lot, so I just checked ou the link. I cannot access the catalog only about 5 roses on the main page.

For example, I didn't see Grand Gala - that one I have and love, it is an excellent and fragrant cut flower from Meilland. You will love it Mike.

I am jut wondering if there is any special way to access the catalog or my browser plays a trick on me.

To Cliff -- I'm very happy to hear about your specialty on-line business. After all the ups and downs, you've landed on your feet!

I love (LOVE!) roses. However, I'm a newbie at gardening (and to this forum). Are there any particular ones that you can recommend for someone starting out with rose gardening? Or is it advisable to gain some experience with growing roses prior to making an investment? Thanks in advance for your guidance, folks.

The person who could best answer that is the owner, Cliff Orent. Drop him an email and explain this to him and I'm sure he will recommend some good roses for you. there is a question sheet on the website you could use for this purpose.

The best place to go for suggestions on roses is to people who grow roses where you live.
There may be folks here who are in your area, and can advise, if you will tell us where you're located.

Failing that, see if there is a local rose society in your area (check the American Rose Society website).
Local societies often compile lists of "best choices" for their area.

Hi Jeri,

I am in the beautiful (and rainy) Northwest - Seattle, WA. I looked at the list of roses recommended for the NW area on Woodland Park Zoo society website. However, I was unable to determine which varieties of roses to buy. I'll write to Cliff for his personal recommendations on roses that are suited for newbie gardeners in the NW.

I want to plant roses that are hardy and disease resistant. I like roses with lots of blooms and lush foliage like climbers. :)

Well, I'm not a rose growing newbie, but I am NOT one bit knowledgeable. I know the term "own root", but do not know why it is preferred. Are you all going woooohooo 'cuz these type of roses are:
a. Very disease resistant
b. prolific bloomers
c. Usually well scented, as the old roses are
Or, are these these qualities to be found in Cliff's roses...the only type he grows?
Or, is it due to their rarity?

It's their rarity, but also that Cliff's plants are gorgeously healthy! I recd the most perfect rose plant last year from Cliff. It was a wonderfully healthy large Priscilla Burton. It stayed in a pot and went in my garage for the winter and it awoke this spring just as healthy as when it went to sleep. It was easily the most perfect rose specimen I have ever recd via mail order. It's getting ready to bloom soon and still looks perfect!

...wow, and all the way from Ca. to N.Y., too. Are all of his "own root"? Is that best? Really basic query, I'm sure....Don't hit me, I did a search and got 105! Rare is nice, I guess, for all of you with acres of roses. I haven't that much room and just want beauty, health, great rebloom and scent. If rare comes with it, all the better. Advise please, if you will :>)

Yes, all of the roses Cliff is offering will be on their own roots.
I've received several from him lately, and the plants were of uniformly fine quality and size.

Many of the roses he is offering are difficult to obtain.
Some, he himself imported from other countries, and so we are inheriting the benefits of his daring.
Some of them are roses that have been in the U.S., but are difficult to find.

Leacate, you are in Southern CA, so I feel very confident in recommending that you consider 'Gardens Of The World.'
This fine HT has for several years been unobtainable, and now Cliff is offering it.
(Unlike some HTs, it grows like a champ on its own roots.)
When it was in commerce, GOTW was THE HT I recommended to people who are not experienced.
GOTW would get them "hooked" on roses. Check it out on "HELPMEFIND" at the link below.

As to why are own-root roses preferred.
There are MANY reasons, among them that budded plants eventually "wear out."
And that few of the quality growers are now producing budded roses, for a whole bevy of reasons.
If I was forced to buy a budded rose, I would bury the bud union, so that it could become an Own-Root Rose.

Thank you so much, jerijen, for the info and the suggestion of Gardens of the World. The pic on HMF doesn't match the description of "white with pink edge", as sometimes happens with only one photo. What I'd really like to know is this : Are his roses exclusively of the type generally rated A-A+ for disease resistance, or does his main interest lie in the roses obscurity? There are no ratings or descriptions in the catalog.

LEAHCATE - When you click on the link Jeri provided, also click on the "photos" tab and you'll see about 20 different pictures of this rose. I can tell you that GOTW is very disease resistant. I got mine from Jeri as an unrooted cutting in late 2006, and it has been absolutely fantastic. As to the ratings, I am not sure they've been rated over hear since Cliff might be the only person with some of these roses. I'd email Cliff and ask him about a specific rose you're interest in as to disease resistance.

And, Leahcate -- Remember LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.
You are in SoCal, and so is Cliff, but he is in Morongo Valley, near Palm Springs.
I live near the Ventura Co. Coast, so Cliff can grow many roses clean, which I cannot. If asked, he will be straight with you about what he knows.

Well, you know it's gotta be good, when EYE go to the limits of praising an HT.
Y'know, I used to think maybe I lived in the only place it was good, and that's why they dropped it.
Now I realize it's even good over a wide range of conditions, and that sorta makes me MAD.
Lesser roses have been promoted, while this beauty was dropped.
I just don't get it.

mgleason...Duh! How'd I miss "photos". Still odd that they call it white with pink edges.

Leacate, the color is close to the edge as the bloom begins to open, and spreads as it opens futher.
So in the coolest weather, there is more white.
You'll see the same effect with the better-known rose, 'Double Delight,'
but GOTW is resistant to mildew and rust here, where DD struggles with powdery mildew.

I just received the two roses that I ordered from Cliff today. I emailed Cliff on Saturday and they arrived in South Carolina today. And let me tell you they are two gorgeous plants!!!

Order now! I cannot believe how great my six look, and the new growth in just a few days is unbelievable. I potted mine up in 5 gallon containers for now until I figure out where to put them.

I finally ordered Osiana and Helene de Gerlache. I got the last Helene which Cliff said is both beautiful and fragrant so I can't wait to see it. If you're going to order do it soon as it sounded like he doesn't have much left.

Good choices! The Helene de Gerlache I got from Cliff had blooms straight out of the box. Smell is wonderful.

I'm glad to hear that. I kept asking about other roses vs. Helene and every time Cliff said that Helene was better. I was very happy he had one left for me. I'll have to order from him again next spring to get Gardens of the World and a few others on my wish list. Everyone who ordered should be sure to post some pics of theirs this summer so I have a nice long list next time.

I got my roses yesterday. They're huge, probably the biggest own root roses I've ever seen. Osiana even has a bud. I'm very happy with my order.

Sadly, I will have to wait. I do have too many in pots. Order away everyone, I'll enjoy through you.
