How many new locks and keys for our new home?
Comments (8)Our front door also has a security door- deadbolt and locking doorknob on each, and over the years has evolved to 4 different keys. It doesn't bother me because we rarely use keys since our point of entry is through the big garage door. I generally don't carry my keys along either, which might be a bad idea if the power ever goes out and I come home to find out that the garage door can't open. We do though, have a concealed key to access the garage, and another concealed key to then access the house from the garage. Ugh, it sounds like a nightmare when I write it out like that. When we do leave via front door, I generally just lock the deadbolt on the security door. If we go out that way, we probably aren't going to be gone long and that's enough security for our neighborhood generally speaking. I tend to abide by the thought that if someone wants to get into your house while you are gone, they will. It would be easier for someone to jump the fence and break a back window, rather than work their way through the front door... which makes that whole thing I wrote about concealed key here and concealed key there seem ridiculous. If you buy into that train of thought that someone is going to get in if they want to, then rekeying for one key for convenience sake doesn't seem like a bad idea at all. Will also add that when we bought our house, the seller's agent lost the keys, so he paid to rekey the whole house when we took possession. The locksmith that came out and did it rekeyed all the locks to the same key- so we did start out as what you are thinking of doing, but I'm not sure we have any two alike anymore!...See MoreNeed help deciding on HVAC / insulation for our new construction home
Comments (1)Now that you have discovered you have natural gas, are you going to investigate who much it will cost to bring a pipe into your house? I don't see in the load calculation the R values for the walls and attic? Do you know what values were used for spray foam and batt insulation? Do you know how the spray insulation will be installed in the attic? Will it be open or closed cell? The firs quote is for a 4 ton single stage heat pump (XR15) while the second is for a 5 ton variable speed heat pump (XV20i) which is Trane's top of the line product. It is not a fair apples to apples comparison, but the price gap is big. You need to ask about the size for the second quote....See MoreNeed advice on updating exterior of our new house.
Comments (5)I think you should post some more pictures. That picture is probably the most unflattering view of your nice house. It makes the garage door look exaggerated, which it probably isn't in person. Everything depends on your budget, of course, but without spending too much money (like changing the roof and exterior materials), which I am certainly not qualified to give opinions about, I would think about creating a wider, more substantial and nicer walkway to the front door. A couple of pretty planters on either side of the garage, and larger light fixtures would go a long way. Im sure you could do something else with that post. Comments (32)Lovely Allison! It seems so different from your usual style, although I know this home is different. @l pinkmountain our sunroom is heated and cooled and we have the sliding windows, which allow for it to basically become a screened room. Our walls are mostly all windows with very little drywall. When we built our house, we had the concrete poured and roof done. At that time we wanted a screened in porch. In less than five years, we had the screen removed and windows/drywall added (along with heat/air). That room is basically a den, and we are able to have regular furniture (it's humid here!). I have antique wood pieces in the room. You could probably easily modify your porch to suit your needs/wants....See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
