Nyssa Sylvatica with strawberries as groundcover?

I just bought a small (3 feet tall?) skinny Nyssa Sylvatica, and am looking for a place in our yard to plant it. I'm considering a spot in the middle of a large raised landscaping bed which tends to get a little soggy after it rains but does drain out. From what I've read, the Nyssa should like this or at least tolerate it OK. My only concern is that this bed is currently covered in (edible) strawberries, and we plan to keep them there until shaded out.
So will the Nyssa grow alright being surrounded by strawberries? They do a great job keeping the soil moist and weeds out, but will they suck out too many nutrients, or cause some other problems?
Thanks for your input!
