Caught him right in the act! Wonderful picture, meg. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Michelle, I don't live in Washington and am no expert on the matter, but I don't know that it's quite late enough yet to be considered "late in the season". Don't know whether or not it would be unusual to see the bird that you saw. I think it's terrific though that you want to contribute your sighting! I found a link to the Seattle Audubon Society, and I suspect that someone there would be able to help you. Hope that helps!~~Angie Seattle Audubon Society: http://www.seattleaudubon.org/birdweb/bird_details.aspx?id=265

I have one sitting on the feeder as we speak...Looks very grumpy, all fluffed out. I warmed up the sugar water this morning as it was 34*. I might still have 2, I spotted 1 at the back feeder at about the same time hubby said there was one in the front. As much as I love them I wish they would go.....I worry about them this late. Last year my latest sighting was on Sept 29th.

Hi, a good all around food that lots of birds enjoy is plain old black oil sunflower seed (BOSS). Chickadees, titmice, cardinals, nuthatches etc. Cardinals love safflower seed as well. Try to stay away from the mega size mixtures...most contain millet & other seeds that will attract tons of pigeons, starlings, house sparrows & other "pigs" that will dominate your feeder & chase the other birds away. Check out some books from your library for birds native to your area, I just listed some that I think are pretty widespread over the US.
