Newbie gardener-did I mess up my collard greens?

My grandmother grew collard greens for years down in Georgia before she died, and they were a staple in our house growing up. I wanted to try my hand at them as I just moved into my first home and have room for a garden.

I only used one packet of seeds- I'm using this year as a "test year". The packet said to plant them in May, so I sowed them 3 days ago. I sowed them shallowly but not very far apart (limited on room, so I will just end up thinning them out). My concern is that I have done a lot of reading, and the recommendation seems to be to sow them later in the summer so that they germinate and grow in the fall. It's already getting hot here during the day and I'm concerned that they'll bolt or just not grow at all. Any advice/suggestions?

I am in Indiana, hardiness zone 5B.
