Was thinking of Stella Lillies here any advice?
Comments (12)I'm guessing the exposure is not North with clematis, hydrangeas, and KO roses in place. Common as they may be, I never dismiss Stella d'Oro's - they're real workhorses and rarely disappoint either in full sun or in more shaded conditions. Perhaps it's my soil, but my Stellas lean toward the lemon yellow, rather than orange tint, range. I've put them together with peonies, Nepetas, Russian Sages, salvias, Veronicas, and hosta. In your space (if you're not interested in widening it) I'd avoid Oriental or Asiatic lilies - lovely as they are, they'e too soldierly when all lined up, plus the foliage goes fast once the blooms are finished. And walking by, you don't want to brush up against and get lily pollen on your skin and clothes....See MoreRecommendation for Daylily?
Comments (3)Regarding 'Red Stella D'Oro' there are several red bloom cultivars in commerce similarly named, however, as Ed has indicated, none - to my knowledge - are AHS registered around the now legendary 'Stella' and 'De Oro' names. Having said that,a few years ago a breeder from Holland introduced 'H. Ruby Stella D'Oro' (Not AHS registered) and this cultivar is marketed now throughout Canada and the USA. I can attest that it does well as a repeat bloomer (Almost a continuous bloomer) in my USZ4 garden (Canadian Z5).It is quite similar to 'H.Pardon Me' and 'H. Siloam Show Girl', but does bloom for a much longer period than either. Overall, it is a desireable plant for red EE RE bloom. There is also a cultivar (Not AHS registeered) marketed as 'H.Ruby D'Oro'that is by comparison, a poor performer - a dull, 'dirty'red with a low growing (Like H. Eenie Fanfare) with limited rebloom. I do not know where this plant originated. In 2010 I came across a new one - 'H. Stella In Red' - again it is not AHS registered. As a new plant this cultivar rebloomed satisfactorily and has an attractive vivid-red bloom. Overwintering has revealed good new fans development. Lastly, you may want to consider a relatively new introduction that is in commerce under two names - 'H.Jersey Early Bird Cardinal' (This name is not registered) and 'H. Endless Heart' - which is the AHS registered name. (Both seem to be the same plant as they have the same Plant Patent #) After one season in my plot it has demonstrated very good red colour, rebloom, and vigorous new fan development. In recent years, the combinations of European bred intros plus patented and trademarked cultivars entering the North American markets (Some without being registered with our AHS) seem to be predominantly aimed at casual gardeners and are often sold through 'Big-Box Stores' and 'Mass Merchants'. This evolution taking place, has unfortunately complicated our daylily world and contributes toward confusion in many daylily collectors' and gardeners' minds....See MoreYour opinion? Purple d'Oro vs Entrapment vs Night Beacon
Comments (4)Purple d'oro used to be pushed as a rebloomer like Stella. Mine reblooms some, but I have better rebloomers. It does bloom for quite a while though, but I don't keep track of how many weeks. It is a very short daylily. Mine started blooming on June 13 & still blooming nicely. I got Entrapment a couple of years ago. The blooms don't seem at all muddy to me, I like the color. The blooms on mine aren't as big as AHS site says they should be though. Blooms are supposed to be 6", mine are only about 4", so it is possible mine is not Entrapment. I've seen it at 2 different places in town this year though, & both look just like mine. Mine doesn't have that heavy a bud count, but I rarely have the bud count that the hybridizers say to expect. It does bloom well though, mine started blooming May 28 & is still blooming, but starting to finish up. Of those 2 I would personally recommend Entrapment highly over Purple d'oro. I like the color better & it blooms better.quite a bit taller than Purple d'oro too if height makes a difference....See MoreTired of my stella d'oros
Comments (14)Stella d'Oro was an instant hit when it first came on the market in the 70's. Much overdone now perhaps, but it's one of the first, if not the first, of the daylilies to bloom here. They do so well, plants get to be the size of bushel baskets with countless scapes; need dividing just about every two years. I've consigned a lot of divisions to the compost, but I can't give up on them entirely....See Moresherrygirl zone5 N il
