Rather than the gold -- yellow-orange -- of Stella de Oro, you might prefer a similar daylily which is a lighter yellow, Happy Returns (see the link at the bottom of the post).

At the bottom of that page there's a link to Rosy Returns, which is another in the Stella family, with the same abundant, almost continuous blooming.

Personally I would make this an easy-care row of variegated hostas, supplemented by a low-growing border of annuals at the front such as impatiens or begonias in white - all of which tolerate what looks like a bit of shade from that tree. Not very imaginative of me, perhaps, but it would be a lovely combination for this particular spot.

I would also go with some bold variegated hostas for some more color and leaf variety. Gold standard or tiara.

The hosta may leaf out before the Hyd. so it will provide some interest.

Also Sedum would go well there.

But do check into the mature width of those, as they appear to already be encroaching on the landing/sidewalk.

Although daylilies love full sun, they will thrive and flower in other conditions.

I have a row of daylilies (Charles Johnston and Heidi Eidelweiss [sic]) growing under the edge of overlapping, mature silver maples. In the morning, they're shaded by the house; in the afternoon, by the maples. In between, they get an hour or two of direct sun. Theoretically, they shouldn't bloom, but somehow it's a bright shade, and they're happy.

Now, if that's the north side of jess's house, I'd definitely recommend hostas.

Another observation: because the walkway is so narrow, any plant with any height in the adjacent bed will make the walkway seem even narrower. Depending what's planted there, it might be a good idea to widen the bed.

I'm guessing the exposure is not North with clematis, hydrangeas, and KO roses in place.

Common as they may be, I never dismiss Stella d'Oro's - they're real workhorses and rarely disappoint either in full sun or in more shaded conditions. Perhaps it's my soil, but my Stellas lean toward the lemon yellow, rather than orange tint, range. I've put them together with peonies, Nepetas, Russian Sages, salvias, Veronicas, and hosta.

In your space (if you're not interested in widening it) I'd avoid Oriental or Asiatic lilies - lovely as they are, they'e too soldierly when all lined up, plus the foliage goes fast once the blooms are finished. And walking by, you don't want to brush up against and get lily pollen on your skin and clothes.

I like the Stella d'Oro's idea and hosta maybe even Sage impations are nice idea too.. I can widen the bed that is not a problem either..Im thinking that Stella and Hosta might not look good side by side next to each other here. Either a row or hosta or stella and maybe some impations in front of them..I guess Im afraid to make it too busy here. That why I was thinking all Stella or all Hosta but never thought of making the bed wider and putting impatients in front of them for added color..

If the hydrangeas are happy there, they are going to get quite a bit bigger, and so you won't have much if any room in front of them for long. That doesn't mean you can't add something now --but just stick to things that don't mind being moved and you won't mind digging up. Also if you could clarify sun exposure and moisture availability and let that help guide your plant choices. I don't usually think of daylilies and impatiens together due to differing requirements, but perhaps you have enough water and not too much sun.

Morning sun for the front of the bed mostly shade by noon. Back towards the hydrageas it gets morning shade from the bradford pear tree and by 12 or 1pm it is sunny. It can get drier there but not anything too dry. I use to grow zinnias there and they did fine but the tree is getting bigger now and shades the area more but not all day long..

Consider Lady's Mantle. They are care free, low growing at 12 - 15" and have lovely shaped leaves that cause water to form drops like jewels on them. I have groupings of them in front of my hydrangeas along the front walk and the effect is lovely.

I intersperse them with cat mint, which like Lady's Mantle is up early each spring. It has soft lavender blooms and attracts hummingbirds. I put a wire flower ring of some sort over them each spring which quickly gets hidden in their foliage, just to keep them organized as they can collapse, especially after a heavy rain. It, too, is a hardy mounding plant. Low growing, repeat blooming daylilies would look lovely with both.

Morning sun and afternoon shade is perfect growing conditions for any day lily. Stella's are always nice. THey will do fine fighting it out with the shrubs.

I love stella lilies but I think a row of them would be too boring. Why not mix it up. Start with spacing your lilies. Then add some coral bells and hosta. along the front you can add golden creeping Jenny and then set in a few annual beginias and impatiens

We have Stella Odora Lillies in front of our picket fence
and in backside towards the house. They bloom until late fall. And they would look lovely in front of the sidewalk.
If you put them back alittle and put hostas in front of them.
And put maybe rocks in front of the hostas. It would really
look nice and colorful.
