Help with uneven(damaged) drywall seam
Comments (11)If you exposed the seam in the sheetrock, you need to tape it. If you just skim over the seam with joint compound, it will crack at the seam and it will keep cracking no matter how many times you cover it back up (learned the hard way!). I like to use the self adhesive mesh joint tape, it's usually yellow, with setting-type joint compound. It dries/sets fast, and you can speed it up with a hair dryer. Then you can sand it with fine sandpaper, or use a damp rag if you're careful, to smooth it out. The mesh tape can take the sanding a lot better than the paper tape. The paper tape will fray once you hit it with sandpaper, or pucker if you get it wet. You can sand right down to the mesh tape if you want to. This leaves a very thin repair on your wall, and almost certainly won't show once you prime and paint....See MoreDrywall Seams Around Window Openings
Comments (8)If we use three inch wide casing four inches of drywall will still be exposed. This is a presentation window and cracks at the corners of the window are unacceptable to me. We had a lot of serious issues in our home due to ghetto construction by the original builder 30 years ago and subsequent contractors. I spent the better part of the last year reframing and planning the walls to make them plumb and flat and used 18 gauge metal studs to level and flatten the ceiling. I made it clear I wanted full sheets used along with a Level 5 smooth finish. We paid 4,000.00 for this work. Looks like my wife and I will have to rent a truck to pick up two sheets of 5/8â 54â wide drywall and redo the wall. I will ask that their tape & finish person completes the work. He has to come back anyway since he forgot to sand many areas....See MoreHow to fix 1" gaps in drywall seams?
Comments (14)Just my opinion, but if the drywall is solidly attached to the studs and isn't flexing and doesn't move when you push it, then I would assume that any settling is done and nothing is going to move. I would finish the walls and see what happens. By the way, there is a comment on the other thread about first filling in the gaps with some expansion foam and/or pre-caulk filler rope. That might be a good idea since it it an outside wall. Also, there is a professional drywallers site with forums called drywalltalk.com. They might have opinions on whether this is just crummy installation or structural movement....See MorePeeling paint/drywall issue. Need advice
Comments (1)You shouldn't need to replace the drywall. If you have ripped off the paper facing of the drywall, just apply some Gardz to that area and then patch it and paint as normal....See Morebritwooten
