Your Own Housecleaning Habits
Comments (21)I'm back, and I made a tentative schedule for myself. You're right, because there are more people and animals in my house, your exact schedule will not work for me. But I used the idea of it, and expanded, so I will start with this. As time goes on I think I will add to it. All of these things I already do, though not often enough. Having it written down will help me alot, so I thank you. This list is in addition to laundry and dishes, which I have to do daily in my house. I average one to two loads of laundry a day, and wash dishes once or twice also. So here's my new cleaning schedule: Cleaning Schedule Daily Sunday Clean bathroom. Sweep hallway and living room. Pick up clutter in hotspots Clean sinks. Monday Dust surfaces throughout home. Dust television and computer screens. Pick up clutter throughout home. Clean sinks. Swish toilet Clean old food out of fridge and wipe areas you can see. Tuesday Clean out car. Vacuum with shop vac. Clean sinks. Swish toilet. Clean kitchen floor with rag on hands and knees to get in the corners. Wednesday Clean bathroom. Sweep hallway and living room. Pick up clutter in hotspots. Thursday Sweep/mop throughout home. Pick up clutter. Clean counters thoroughly and wipe with bleach if necessary. Clean sinks. Swish toilet. Friday Clean off dryer and wipe down washer and dryer with bleach cleaner. Sweep laundry area. Clean sinks. Swish toilet. Clean bathroom mirror if needed. Saturday Dust surfaces throughout home. Vacuum carpeted areas Shampoo carpets as necessary. Clean sinks. Swish toilet. Pick one drawer or cabinet in the home and clean it. Monthly Week One: Clean ceiling fans Week Two: Clean all doors throughout home Week Three: Clean windows Week Four: Take everything out of refrigerator and thoroughly clean fridge, inside and out....See MoreDo you tip your contractor?
Comments (15)Cash, like water, is hard to hold onto. People appreciate it most when they need it; otherwise it's symbolic. Tips in cash are nice. Like a smile. : - ) Sure, we can spend more when we have it to spend. Few people save it for their old age. Sending a contractor to another buyer with whom they get along well : this is worth more than gold. Tagging someone with a note that allows "good" buyers to find them would be Also One More Good Thing too. I dream of a future where we can transfer a cumulative "worth note" to someone so that our faith in their abilities comes across to prospects in the surrounding area (space and time). A credibility rating, it shows through to those who seek by similar criteria as ours allowing us to see the best of their strong suits and evaluate fairly where they are less well endowed. This will be one way that the internet will have achieved its potential: a little sharing goes a long way. But only if it's structured sharing. I agree with marcolo's assessment about some contractors who need lessons that are best learnt before the age of 7. I've come across people who couldn't adapt well to any field of productive endeavor end up becoming generalist contractors. (We cannot all be above average (!) and this means there has to be a place for those who are visibly below average. Keeping them in line has always been a challenge. A credibility rating note can be one more factor helping to keep people in line. hth...See MoreDo You Tip Your House Cleaner?
Comments (19)House Cleaners are not Hair Dressers. Plus, it sounds like she's just a cleaner who doesn't work for a company, not that she's the owner of a professional cleaning company. Just becasue she's out on her own, doesn't mean you shouldn't tip her. Anyway, I wouldn't tip her every time but I would give her a nice "tip" or bonus at Christmas time. She's provding a service and probably would really appreciate the extra money. It's a thank you....See MoreHoliday tip for housecleaners?
Comments (13)I think you're amount is a reasonable, fair and appropriate amount. I give my cleaning lady (comes every other week) $100 and my yard man (comes weekly but for a shorter time) also $100. It's what I can afford and I think it is reasonable. I do not give my mail carrier anything other than a piece of my mind as he messes up the delivery of the mail at least once or twice a month - I get other's mail and sometimes never get a bill or two. Complaints to the USPS do not help. I also don't tip garbage guys - rarely the same person twice in a row and they always leave my garbage can smack dab in the middle of my driveway so I have to move it. My hairdresser owns the shop - I make a donation to his favorite charity as he does not accept tips. The valet parkers at my pulmonary rehab don't get a tip each time but I add it up and give the head person (a lovely, very honest woman) a large check that is about equal to 3 times weekly tipping. I trust her to properly distribute this - know she does it on how long they have worked there, and she's so honest she keeps nothing for herself, I've discovered. I figure that they would prefer a bigger amount at Christmas than $2 each time. No one at rehab gives them Christmas tips, as they tip as they go. When my DS live in a luxury NYC co-op, I think he just stood with $100 bills and passed them out to any and all. OMG! The tips that are expected by EVERYONE in NYC at Christmas! Even in his big office bldg (right behind Rockefeller Cntr), it is expected that one will tip the guys at the security desk, even though he has no contact with them - special electronic pass to get to the elevators which are self-operated. They get an email from the building management with the "suggested amount"....See MoreBunny
