Do You Tip Your House Cleaner?

I have a woman who works on her own; it's her own "company" - no employees or partners. In this case, would you tip her above what she charges, or just give her what she charges?

I don't have a house cleaner come in on a regular schedule, more like once every few months or so. She works on her own,
so whatever money I give her goes directly to her, and so I do not tip her.

Same with practigal up there, I have to keep a few smaller vacuums around the house because of my two cats. I love them to death, but they both shed enough to make a new cat out of the hair! What I generally do is keep my smaller vacuum downstairs in the little hutch our laundry supplies are in (it's hard to describe - imagine either a very big pantry or a very small laundry room) and keep one upstairs in the room with that exercise bike I never use. I don't know if that helps, but I remember some advice my mom gave me a long time ago - "you never want to store a vacuum near where you eat or sleep", and I think that's a pretty good call!

I think it depends on what part of the country you live in. In the Midwest, where I grew up, tipping was not part of the culture, except in restaurants, of course. Much the same when we lived in Virginia. BUT, now that we are in New England, everyone seems to expect a tip. I've never seen so many tip jars EVERYWHERE! We've gotten with the program. Accordingly, we tipped the granite installers. It was a small crew of three: the owner and his two employees, one of whom does most of the actual fabrication. It's a relatively new company and all three work hard. They spent several hours helping us layout the countertops on the slabs, helped determine the appropriate curve radii, and were very patient in understanding what I wanted for the runnels (something they had not done much of before). Even though the install was not perfect, it was pretty darn good. For all these reasons, we decided that a tip was warranted. (They also got homemade cinnamon rolls each time they came to the house -- which was frequent since we used the extra granite for a buffet top and for our bathroom remodel.) Did we need to tip? I don't know, but it seemed like the right thing to do given the circumstances and the regional culture.

How I would deal with a cleaning service would be very different than how I deal with a cleaning woman I hired. A service is a business; I don't tip the saleslady at Macy's who helps me - Macy's pays her and her salary is between them. With my own cleaning woman, I pay her what she asked for. After a year, when I go away for a month (she comes every two weeks), I will give her a day's pay during that time as "paid vacation". I know she counts on her money but I don't want her in the house when I'm out of town - she's just too flakey. I always give each $100 at Christmas. Every 2-3 years, I give my yard man and my cleaning woman a raise. My yard man has been with me for nearly 12 years. I'm afraid he's getting to the top amount I can afford to pay him - at some point, all jobs reach that point. If I had a new cleaning service or cleaning woman in my house, I would definitely stay home the first 2-3 times they come. They may have questions or you may see them doing something you do NOT want them to do (rearrange your book shelves?) so being there is a good plan. I still have to stay around with my "new" cleaning woman (started last Aug) as while I have told her WHAT to do, if never occurs to me to tell her what NOT to do as things she does astound me. A few months ago, I was out when she cleaned my library and when I returned, the smell of PineSol was overwhelming when I sat in my upholstered club chair - it was so powerful, it caused me an asthma attack. I couldn't imagine what on earth she even need to use PineSol for in the library - had some been accidentally spilled? I called her and she told me she had "wiped down" my upholstered chair with a cloth with pure, undiluted PineSol on it so the chair would not "smell". My chair did NOT smell - I'm not a smoker and I don't pee on my chair! In 50 years of cleaning women, this was a first. Who knew I had to tell her not to do this? Thank God she didn't do it to the cotton/linen velvet LR sofa! At least my chair was cotton and a quick wipe down with clear water and a good room airing solved the problem. Yes, this IS the same woman who still cannot put the sheets on the bed correctly so we do it together. Believe me, if I could find someone else, I would. But since it is not impossible for me to do any cleaning, I'm stuck with her. I just have to try to anticipate her flights of fancy.

We have decided to wait a few more weeks and see how reopening plays out here. My husband and I have been giving the house a good cleaning every 2 weeks. Not as thorough as our cleaner, but we have been doing a respectable job. I do want our person back very badly, though! A month ago I bought a Roomba. While it does not do as good a job as a conscientious person with a good vacuum, it does a great job keeping up with the dust and cat hair on the floors between cleanings. My husband and I joke about how cheerful the Roomba seems as it goes about its cleaning chores. Quite the opposite of our attitudes when we are doing the cleaning!

Ok, thanks. Yes, this is my first visit from this woman. She's here now and doing a thorough job. I thought not tipping was appropriate but wanted to double-check.

Suzieque, my cleaning lady comes every week. At Christmas I will give her some $$$$$ but, no tip otherwise.

I had a husband and wife couple that cleaned my floors. I did not tip them. I hired them to work for me. I did tip him $10 one time when he helped me move something I could not do myself.

Hm, my cleaning lady is sporadic at best, comes here only when she's in the mood, does a so-so job of cleaning, expects me to feed her breakfast, lunch and snacks, watches a lot of TV while here. Of course, she's cleaning my house, because she's paying off a debt to 'the Bank of Mom'--LOL. No, I definitely don't tip my daughter for cleaning--unless you count all the food she eats and packs up to take home with her.

If she works for herself, no tip. I do give a Christmas gift worth about twice what her regular rate is. And I always give an extra $20 (or more) when I have extra things for her to do.

I have a cleaning service and usually three ladies come to clean every other week. I do not tip them but give them something extra on Christmas and on Mother's Day.

No I pay for the regular normal cleaning, however if I have her to do something special that is not the normal job I may pay differently for the task and I do give her some extra at Christmas.

House Cleaners are not Hair Dressers. Plus, it sounds like she's just a cleaner who doesn't work for a company, not that she's the owner of a professional cleaning company. Just becasue she's out on her own, doesn't mean you shouldn't tip her.

Anyway, I wouldn't tip her every time but I would give her a nice "tip" or bonus at Christmas time. She's provding a service and probably would really appreciate the extra money. It's a thank you.

lol..my mom's cleaning lady became one of her bff's..never tipped her but did bake cakes for bdays, holidays, and they often ate lunch together...when she moved, they wrote/called, and we visited her once...

I have a super-dandy house keeper! She cleans my house (sort of), cooks when she's in the mood, mows my huge yard, pays my bills, does ALL the laundry, walks and bathes the dogs - she's a real jewel! I tip her very well - she gets whatever she wants - that would be ME!
