stacked cabinets or 36 inch cabinet door with 6 inch trim? eight foot ceiling

A single cabinet gives you a lot more storage flexibility. My cabinets go to the 8' ceiling, and I ordered an extra shelf for each of the uppers. That allows me to store more things without stacking, and without wasted space between the top of items and the shelf above.

Not only do you improve your storage space, one cabinet is less expensive than two.

I agree with AnnKH. Stacked cabinets are more for 9' ceilings or taller. With an 8' ceiling, I'd try to get 39" tall cabinets with 3" of crown molding. The 36" cabinets with 6" molding that you mentioned would be my second choice because molding is expensive and takes up what could otherwise be storage space.

the old glass cabinet had heavy leaded glass and a very wide door. Yes, now that you say it, I think it's the width that I don't like. It's so much wider than the other cabinets, making it seem like "odd man out". I'm not surprised to hear you say that the plate racks /small drawers were pretty much useless. Interesting. I like to analyze just what it is that I like /don't like.

Hi Mags...my house is almost at the drywall stage so way too late for the counterhight window but I seriously considered it at one time. I love the look. i did heed the advice of the crank out window. They are casement windows. The architect drew in 3 windows and I gave up one to get more upper cabinets. I hope I don't regret that when it's all done. we (kd) called modernaire and I'm working on a hood. We shall see. Thank you for the advice!

@Kelly Zamonski - How is the tape lighting controlled, i.e turned on manually or with a switch? Is it hard wired from each cabinet to the next? I was overwhelmed at the electrical walk-thru and said no to upper cabinet lighting. I do have everything roughed in for LEDs for under cabinet lighting. The cabinet maker is working on building the boxes now and we have time before installing, but I'm not sure I can change the electrical since there is no hard wiring prepped for any upper cabinet lighting. If I could make that change, any advice you have about how to prep things for tape lighting in the uppers would be so appreciated!

I would need to have more info as to what style of cabinets what are thinking about stacking with? Glass cabinets or just plain. Price is only one facet of cabinet choices, you should have a KD who is independent of cabinet companies to get the real benefit of a KD. I live in Canada so we different companies but the name Fabuwood in my mind was cheap cabinetry I really have no idea of their quality it is just the name turns me off. Sorry but I did go to their site and do not see much in the way of stacked cabinets but lots of fancy trim work to go to the ceiling. If it was me I would keep looking but then I am a KD so try to find the best for my clients. I will say I use Ikea alot in my design work and really find them the best bang for your buck but they have limitations in style for sure.

Most cabinet lines offer a 39" tall wall cabinet now. That will only require a 3" space to fill with crown. If you're using cabinets that can be custom modified to any height....you can make the uppers whatever you like. However, with unlevel floors and ceilings, I highly recommend the use of a 2pc crown (profiled flat stock + crown)

Tips: If you are using INSET or PARTIAL OVERLAY cabinets, these are much easier to apply crown molding to (up to the ceiling). It gives you a little flat space to attach the molding to. If you are using FRAMELESS or FULL OVERLAY, then you definitely need a 2 pc crown combination!!

If modern slab doors, you can just use a flat top molding.
