bathroom vent fan not level

I'm replacing a vent fan in my bathroom. It requires me to attach a plate to the joist, then snap the fan in. The problem is that the fan is flush with the ceiling near the joist, and about 1/2 inch higher on the opposite side. The ceiling is square. However, the joist isn't square, it's tilted. Has anyone seen this before? The only thing I can think of is to somehow shim the plate, then screw the plate on through the shim? Any ideas?
