Emerald Ash Borer
Comments (8)St Paul has a structured plan for the removal of ash trees... which is estimated at 30% of the overall urban forest canopy. Many of these ash trees are in serious decline and would be candidates for removal regardless of the presence of the EAB. Beginning in early 2010 (started early Feb), Saint Paul's Forestry crews will be removing entire blocks of declining ash trees that have been identified throughout the city. These trees have not necessarily been identified as being infested, but will be tagged as needing to be removed. Only trees on public right-of-ways will be removed. No private property trees will be affected - you'll be doing that yourself if you find ash trees on your own property in decline. And since everyone above the age of reason is probably aware of the EAB problem - having the city do the removal to try and stem the situation shouldn't have any effect on property values. By contrast - consider a block of dead and dying trees and the negative effect that would have. There is currently no funding appropriated for the treatment of ash trees on public or private property. However, the Forestry unit will issue permits under certain conditions for the treatment of public property trees by a licensed commercial tree service if owners/residents choose to do so and are willing to pay the costs... highly unlikely people will go this route since it might only be forestalling the inevitable. If you want to hear about all this frst hand - A community meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on March 1st, 2010 at the Rice Recreation Center to discuss the structured removal of ash trees throughout Saint Paul. Forestry staff will be available to answer questions or concerns regarding EAB and ash removals at the meeting....See MoreDilemma of the Emerald Ash Borer

Comments (11)Jrsavoie, I ordered a few gallons of imadichloropid (spelling error) concentrate and have been spreading it around two of mine yearly. At first I was going to do just one but then I realized how long a supply I had. Will it work? Who knows. That vitamin C pill might help keep the cold away and the cost is low so I take it. At the time no one locally was willing to warranty their snake oil treatment so I decided to do it myself. We are in the infancy of treating this bug. Next time I am in an area that has had a long term infestation I will see if there are any surviving ash in the parks or botanical gardens and report back with what they have been using....See MoreI think my Green Ash tree might have the Emerald Ash Borer
Comments (10)The other problem with this tree is a rather large vertical crack starting from the ground and going right up. It's a frost crack - has been there for at least 2 years that I've noticed. From what I read, frost cracks on ash trees don't necessarily kill a tree but do give bugs an opportunity to crawl in there. After Rick's suggestion that it might be another borer, which I hadn't considered, I read about the Redheaded Ash Borer and the Banded Ash Clearwing Borer, native pests that attack ash trees. I'm quite certain there's something buggish in that tree, based on the woodpecker activity which is almost constant. I'm also thinking this tree is a goner - perhaps not from EAB but something else, slowly but surely. I'll still check it closely - I got some plants from southern Ontario a couple of years - is it possible for EAB to have travelled that way? Those plants are now planted right near that ash tree but that's got to be a stretch, no? Having to remove the tree will affect some plants that now benefit from the midday shade it provides (but they can be easily moved). Having to remove it will mean less ash seeds. Having to remove it give me the opportunity to plant something new there, and that's okay with me....See Moremad_gallica (z5 Eastern NY)
