hey guys and gals i need som help with Dischidia Oiantha
Comments (1)I'm not absolutely sure the EA plant is D. oiantha, but it's pretty darned close. I got it myself awhile back, even though I grow oiantha, and it differs in some ways. But in general, oiantha can dry out a bit but not too much. Grow in bright indirect light for the nicest effect. It's probably the easiest of all Dischidias to grow, so you can't really go wrong... I even grow a few in glass containers with no drainage, and it does fine. Denise in Omaha...See Morebacksplash for above bathroom sink? need advice...
Comments (1)I think it's going to be a challenge to make it look like a feature rather than a patch. I'd suggest being much bolder than a white on white design. Perhaps use something that ties in the beige with some other color(s) you want to bring into the room as an accent. I'm giving a link to a site with some beautiful glass mosaics to inspire you. You can also play with their custom blend builder to see what color combinations you like. For example, on the "Subway 1x3 inch blends" page, check out Amazon and Urban Camo 10. On the Bijou 2 Inch glass page, I love the Retro Turquoise with Caramel, and also the Urban Mix 10. If he has to rip out the bullnose above those 12 tiles, that's going to be even more of a challenge. For one thing, the bullnose is offset from the field tile, so I don't know how he's going to do it cleanly above the tile to the left of the toothbrush holder. And you'll need to rely on his skill to not damage the tiles on the perpendicular wall. Also, it looks like you'll need a radius bullnose, and not all tile lines include that shape. You could ask him to suggest specific lines of tile that would work for that bullnose, and see if any of them please you. Bill V. can chime in here, but I *think* it's the shape that American Olean calls A4200. You can see it in their "Matte" line and their "Bright" line. Hope this helps.... Comments (8)Thanks for more pictures...I just love your retro bathroom. IMHO, I would paint the walls an off-white or white, then you could use a matching white toilet/sink combo. For some reason I don't find the wood (mirror & cabinet) a good match for retro. Having grown up in a neighborhood of bungalow styled homes in San Diego, a lot of homes still have that retro bathroom look. I have often seen the primary color (such as your tan tiles) punched up with black accents, might not be for you, but thought I would mention it. What I would do over the sink is place a large round beveled mirror held up with clear plastic rosette holders. I would leave the towel rack, since you can cover the bar with towels. Replace the switch plates with a matching tile color or white porcelain. A mirrored door cabinet over the toilet would match the theme...not sure if recessed or not-recessed would work best in your space. What color do you love that would complement the tile color? Hope you don't mind all these suggestions...LOL. My Mom still owns the little bungalow home (she rents it out now) that I grew up in and that bathroom was pink and black...it was small but seemed so big in decor. A couple of retro travel posters or something like that on the walls would add some color that you could tie in with the towels...like maybe an orange with pale turqoise. http://www.art.com/asp/View_HighZoomResPop.asp?apn=10116669&imgloc=6-679-Z000CTVF.jpg&imgwidth=937&imgheight=641 Here is a link that might be useful: medicine cabinet...See MorePartial kitchen reveal / Backsplash advice needed
Comments (12)Thanks everyone!! dianalo, thanks for the suggestion re:Remodela's backsplash (very nice!). Not sure I understand about going higher than 5.5" for a ss backsplash. If we went with a soapstone backsplash, we were thinking of 5.5" up to the window trim and then stepping it down to 4" for the rest of the perimeter. lavendar lass, we're definitely going for a more traditional look, although the ceiling is a bit more contemporary more by default. We've even considered attaching some beams in the vaulted ceiling to give it more of traditional look. The ceiling will likley remain white but, we'll be painting the walls (either a green or light gray). We are looking to use some simple window treatments (shades?) . We also have a couple of pendants from Barnlightelectric for over the peninsula. Hope this helps give you a feel. Thanks mpagmom. It's good to hear that all-tile backsplashes aren't a problem for cleaning. Is that true for behind the sink and range also? Thanks palimpsest, we're definitely going for more traditional as mentioned above. If you only have the soapstone under the window and glass over the range, are there generally problems with with just drywall everywhere else? Someone mentioned that variations in the wall may leave some separations between the soapstone counter and the drywall. Is that a real concern? One complication is that we really need to finalize the soapstone layout and let them know if we want any soapstone for the backsplash. It might be easier if we could decide after the rest of the kitchen was together. Keep your thoughts and suggestions coming as we're still searching....See Morelocaleater
