Attractive home, and your plants look quite happy!

To be perfectly blunt, I am sure that replacing those plants would not solve the problem of the entranceway here. Both the depth of the beds and the width of the walk look undersized for the scale of the home and entrance, and you don't want plants narrowing the entrance more.

I would plan on redoing the walkway, or at least adding a course of brick that matches the house brick on each side to widen the walk. Ideally it would be at least as wide as the door with sidelights, and with a landing that goes from pillar to pillar. I would get rid of all the grass to the right of the newly widened walk, and make the bed to the right of the door as deep as the bed to the left of the walk.

I know that this isn't what you asked, but I am trying to answer the unasked question of how to make the front entrance more appealing.

I would do a new walk and slab. It is currently too small/narrow for the house.

I love the idea of redoing the walkway!! We have a pretty strict HOA and would have to get it approved but my husband is on the board and seems to think it is something they would consider. We did not design the flower bed shape or walkway and have just been working with the layout that was already there. Thanks!! That is super duper helpful!

Once you get the walkway settled, I would consider one of the dwarf gardenia varieties for that location (i.e. radicans). They stay relatively small, are evergreen, and produce attractive, fragrant flowers that will enhance the entrance.

This assumes you get enough sun there - gardenias do best in at least 50% sun.

As an intervening step before widening the path, which will be a little pricey and may take a year of preparations or DIY time, I would consider very large pots or urns on either side of entrance, probably set up a couple inches on plinths made of stepping stones, &/or on on pretty largish river gravel enclosed by what appears to be existing edging. My goal would be a planting considerably taller and more dramatic than a simple shrub planted either side, with objective of focusing on entrance and proportion matching your very nice stonework. You have many more shrub-in-a-pot choices in your zone, but here in IN I would choose Ivory Halo dogwood as in keeping with your roses and hydrangeas. Underplant that seasonally with trailing stuff...maybe just white petunias, or embellish further as your fancy takes you....mine varies considerably from year to year:) Asparagus fern dies to a finey textured gold in winter. A few ordinary vinca lives through pots in most winters here. In fall plunge in a couple mass market mums and plant a handful of bulbs for spring color, and at Christmas, maybe beef up your pots with some fake berries or cut boughs of evergreens. Deborah Silver's website has fabulous over-the-top year-round planters, for inspiration.

I like the idea of the potted plant/urn. I was originally thinking pots/urns at the entrance but knew we had to replace those Hydrangeas and switched to the idea of planting a tall,slender tree/shrub where the brickwork extends upward.

While I love the idea of widening the path that many of you suggested, we have discussed this option and we will probably be moving in 2 years. Since all of the houses in our neighborhood have around the same value, it would not be something that gets us any extra money upon resale especially since we already have one of the better kept flower beds in the neighborhood. We have already made huge improvements to our curb appeal since we bought the house (we removed a huge Bradford Pear that blocked the entire view of the home). As a result of considering all these factors, we have decided to eliminate the expanded walkway option.

We have decided the best direction to take in our situation would be to just do a few simple things to clean it up and make it look compete.

We do big pots/urns at the place I work to dress up the fronts of buildings, always get lots of compliments. Done right they can be stunning. You can find whole books on the subject with lots of ideas.
