HELP: tree/shrub to frame front door

User

HELP! We currently have Knockout Roses and English Dwarf Boxwoods in the flower beds surrounding the front door of our home. We planted these last year and LOVE them. However, 2 years ago we planted Hydrangeas, one on each side of the front door, but they have been growing unevenly and 1 has barely come back this year. We have decided to remove them and replace them with something else and we need your help! We are open to all suggestions.

Things to Note:

-We are in zone 8a.

-Front of house is east facing and the flower bed receives shade starting in the afternoon.

-Available planting space is 30" square.

-We would like something that is green all year and doesn't require too much attention.

-We would like something to frame the door without obstructing entry.

-We like classic and simple things but are open to all ideas.

In the second image, I have indicated with yellow arrows where the new plants will go.

We would love any and all suggestions!!
