Comments (11)I do have a fence violet...I couldn't grow anything without a fence...I have a big ugly fence...Here is a picture taken awhile back...you will see that my garden is all inside the fence...but with all those beds running the length of the fence...I couldn't resist growing climbers on it...pole beans and peas...etc...and since the dog is in the fence they usually don't come right up to it but last night she was locked on the porch and they had dinner on me....I went to Wal-mart and bought 4 more rolls of this plastic mesh fencing that they sell and will put it on the fence behind the beans and peas...the leaves are too big to grow through this mesh...I was talking to the cashier at Wal-Mart and she said they came into the parking lot and ate up about a thousand bucks worth of plants.. I hate deer...Deer hunting is big here in TX and many many people do it for the meat...not just the sport...so I hope they all have a good year this year...they are already having babies ...I saw a little tiny one with its mother yesterday..Arhgggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...see the perimether fence ...that is where all the climbers are ...and the fence you see in the picture...is inside another fence...but they sail right over most fences.......See MoreI hate deer I hate deer I hate deer
Comments (27)When I was a teenager, my mother thought chipmunks were cute. My Aunt next door cut down on the amount of cats & Mom was feeding them (the tree rats). The next thing we knew, there were chipmunks EVERYWHERE. Dozens of them, digging up all the bulbs & everything we planted. Emptying all the bird feeders. Running & playing & most of all multiplying. My Uncles were poisoning, trapping & shooting them until they finally got down to a manageable number. In later years, I had a Sheltie who thought it was her job to be on chipmunk patrol & she took it very seriously & kept them away. My Newf isn't that excited over such a small mouthfull but we have an Eskie who likes organic dog toys (mice & such are organic cat toys). Linda...See MoreWho knew deer liked Euphorbia?
Comments (13)My sisters and BIL's in N.Y. are constantly battleing deer, they eat everything in site, they even came up on one sisters porch and ate what she had in hanging baskets. They have everything people have told them to doto try and discourage them. One BIL went to the 99 cent store, bought a case of irish spring soap, drilled holes in them and hung them all around his garden,it worked for a short while, then i guess they became immune to it. MY BIL was always complaining about them so much, that i went out and bought some fabric with deer all over it and made him a throw blanket, and on the back i put "for the love of Bambi",as he was always saying he wished he could shoot that da** Bambi. My sister was supposed to take a picture when he opened it,but she forgot!! bummer,as i'm sure that was a priceless picture. kathi PS i guess we all fight something, for us it's those darn Gophers, hate them....See MoreDEER (time to get out the cayenne?)
Comments (7)Accursed forest rats! Been there. It really sucks, but when you're *this* close to production, it sucks even more. I think I would go with a barrier, if possible, especially since you don't have the lead option. I don't know if cayenne is effective or if it's effective for long, and I would think that hot substances might injure birds (don't know for sure, but it's something to consider). Sometimes the deer would come into my garden, top the tomatoes and gnaw on the roses, then didn't come back for the rest of the year. In other years they were regular visitors. I even caught them lying down in my garden one night. The nerve! I swear they were taunting us. Maybe you could borrow a good-sized hunting dog and leave him/her out for a few nights. :-) Even so, most critters are crafty, and once they figure out there is no real or long-term danger, they often come back. This is why things like predator urine are not terribly useful; being highly motivated by food, they eventually figure out that there is no imminent threat and they start feeding at the trough again. Plus, that urine stuff smells so bad you'll want to hurl when you open the bottle, let alone pour it on the ground on a warm summer night. Katie bar the door (and close the windows). :-) In summation, they may not come back. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. You don't necessarily want to take the chance that this was just a random strike and they won't be back. I used deer netting; it's reasonably effective and won't cause collateral damage. If you do try any of the pepper preparations or Irish Spring soap, let us know how it goes. Of course, if the deer don't come back we'll never know if it's effective or not. :-) Just my $0.02. Good luck with whatever you try, and sorry about the carnage....See MoreEmbothrium
