Please Help Me Visualize a Guest Room
Comments (15)Thanks so much for all of your suggestions. I promise to post pics of the furniture once the floor is refinished, and we set the furniture up in the room. Staceyneil--the furniture is squared off, not rounded. Also, I love the second inspiration pic you included and keep going back to it. We adopted a child from China and decorating the room with an Asian vibe would be meaningful for us and for friends/family who would use the guest room--how nice to be able to include that with my grandparents' furniture in the same space! Franksmom--I don't sew but could probably manage to hem up a piece of fabric for pretty curtains, when we get that far. I'm with you on the second-hand shopping. I enjoy it for the hunt, budget issues aside. Deeinohio--excellent point about taking it a step at a time. We'll set up the furniture in the room, stop and post pics, and then continue. :) jeanne_gallo--Your office sounds beautiful. We used the color in the office of our last home, a 1916 bungalow, and enjoyed it very much. It will be interesting to use the same color but for an entirely different space and style here. Igloochic--great to read your reply! I recognize your name from my lurking here. I appreciate your taking the time to address so many aspects of this project with practical suggestions. Good point about using just one of the dressers. I'll try the cedar chest next to the bed and see how that looks and functions. Yes, I'm seeing lamp and comfy chair shopping in my future. Do you think duvet-type bedding might work? I've been admiring those and also European-type feather beds--are they actually the same thing? I'm enjoying a project that has some starting perimeters (furniture and paint color) but is also somewhat of a blank slate....See MoreI need help decorating a guest room with beige walls and carpet
Comments (27)Leave the bed where it's located, and to gain a bit more room, you could change out the side rails and footboard for a simple metal frame. Shop around & you might find one for less than $50. Then if decorating is not your forte, purchase a prematched set of items like this Waverly set available from a variety of retailers. This queen set is from Kohls and the reversible quilt, pillow shams, bed skirt is on sale for $134. Has a matching valance. Depending on the size of your window you might need a few to install on a single rod. Nightstands are from Target, but I'm sure there are lots of this type available from Wayfair or Overstock too. I selected this style because it has drawers for your guests. Select one that is close to the height of your mattress. The lamps are from Target online also. Add some artwork and the room is done until more funds are available....See MoreWarning to travelers (Air bnb users)
Comments (13)We had a bad Airbnb experience last summer and despite previous excellent experiences,mI'm reluctant to use them again now. My parents were visiting when we lived in CA and our house there was small, so I found an Airbnb a few blocks from us. None of the airbnbs near us had more than about five to seven reviews. First one I chose, the owner agreed to rent to us about two months before their visit then backed out about two weeks before they came. Second one had just one bathroom and the toilet clogged the first time my dad used it. My eighty year old mother managed to shut it off. They couldn't get it unclogged so they called me. I called the owner who was very unhelpful. I tried for an hour to fix the toilet, all the while keeping the owner up to date. He authorized us to use some old towels to clean the bathroom floor. The owner continually refused to take any action to fix the toilet. Eventually I told the owner I was taking my parents to my home for the night because the house wasn't inhabitable with no working toilet. I asked him to notify me when he was able to get the toilet working. He demanded that I wash the old towels we had used even though the washer and dryer in the Airbnb house were in a locked off part of the house. So I took them to my house and washed them in my machines. He notified me that the toilet was working but at that point it was ten o'clock after a long day and my parents had gone to bed in my bedroom. When I asked for a refund for that night, the owner was very very nasty in response. So I asked him to not contact me again (and blocked his number in my phine--he was that nasty) and appealed to Airbnb. They opened a case, but did nothing until I contacted AmEx and asked for them to reverse the charges for that night. At that point, Airbnb refunded the money. If this had been a hotel, they would have just moved my parents to another room or sent maintenance to fix the problem. With Airbnb there really weren't any good remedies. If I had not lived in town, my parents would have had to either stay with no toilet overnight or scramble to find a hotel room and pay for it. After that, I feel like there's a potential to end up in an uninhabitable house with few good options. So I haven't done Airbnb again. I'm not saying I wouldn't, but I'd think carefully about how likely the owner was to take care of any problems and what my options would be if he or she didn't....See MoreHelp with beds for guest room, please.
Comments (368)Julia, it’s been quite a challenge but I’m so happy I found those wall mounted headboards that fit the narrow space next to the window and love how the metal and wood frames look with them. Definitely with you on avoiding the frames with “toe-breaker” middle legs! If the Zinus Suzanne frame that I got happens to work for your room, it seems very sturdy and well made and I highly recommend it. Especially if you only need regular length twin beds. Can’t beat the quality for that low price!...See Moredeeinohio
