Anyone Ordering Any Different, Little Known Roses This Year?
Comments (34)From my spring orders, the most unusual: Errinerung an Brod (rambler) Inermis Morletii (rambler) Umbra (gallica hybridized by Paul Barden) Incantation (small shrub rose, also by Barden) Geschwind's Orden (shrub) Norland Rose (climber) Break o'Day (Brownell HT) Andrewsii (spinossisima) Alika (gallica) Prairie Flower (Buck) Sweet Fragrance (Grandiflora by Ping Lim) Omphale (gallica) Daphne' (gallica) Heinrich Karsch (polyantha) And for every one of these (plus the other seven I haven't listed because I see them talked about all the time) I must find a rose already in the garden to remove, pot up and give away. No expansion, that's my self-imposed new rule and that will make planting twice the work, I think! Oh well, a good number of these will be small bands that may not go in the ground yet this year. We'll see how they do in pots for a while. :-) Anne...See MoreSo anyone have any good, holy cow its a ... stories
Comments (7)Mines more of a dumb blonde moment more than anything, and the fact that I did it twice, makes it worse. I mentioned before, I think it was one of my first planting out that I tought I planted toms, but realized later that they were sweet william. Well the other day, I strategically placed out each indiviual sweet pea seedling (oh, about 30 of them) I spent over an hour planting these guys delicately. When I was done, I went to my back porch to see what else could be planted out. I picked up one jug and looked inside, took a double take, re-checked the tag, and what do you know, it was my sweet peas! I ran out front to see what I planted out, it was my dwarf lupines, the one container that I has specific plans for and was holding off planting them out until they were bigger. Needless to say, I dug up each one and after another hour I had them planted where they were going later. (unfortuantly only half have survived) Then waited for the next day to plant out those sweet peas. I still can't figure out how I mixed them up, the sweet peas were almost 4" tall, where as the dwarf lupine was only in seed leaf stage, not even an inch tall!...See MoreAnyone good at identifying diseases?
Comments (5)Hello, jspringer4. The leaves were too far away for my eyes so here are some comments based strictly on the color of the leaves: Camellia dieback (occurs more often with sasanquas and reticulatas) or some form of root rot (a fungal infection casued by a Phytophthora fungus infestation). Both are fungal infections. For more information on camellia dieback, read the information on this link: http://www.aces.edu/pubs/docs/A/ANR-1204/ANR-1204.pdf For more information on root rot, read this link: http://www.camellias-acs.org/display.aspx?catid=3,9,300&pageid=1261 If the browned-out leaves have something that looks like specks, it could be camellia scale. For information on camellia scale, read this link: http://ipm.ncsu.edu/AG189/html/Camellia_Scale.HTML A bronze leaf color suggests either spider mites' damage or too much sun (common in the Fall and Winter when the trees that provide shade loose foliage). But a "too much sun" diagnosis would mostly affect those leaves in direct contact with the sun; that is not the case on your picture so I would cross that out... Comments (14)I grow cannas specifically because the hummingbirds like them, so I grow hummingbird favorites along with them too. And mine are in pots also (and I never thought about them breaking the pot, now I'm scared!). I usually have zinnias, terra cotta million bells, white annual phlox, blue salvia for contrast - mostly hot colors with a little blue. This isn't a great picture, but might show you how they look (the cannas weren't blooming yet). Ann...See Morewritersblock (9b/10a)
