So anyone have any good, holy cow its a ... stories

Well I knew I was having problems with ids but this was embarrasing.I gave away about 30 plants last week to 10 different people. They are beans I said,container beans.I have never grown beans so I did seeds this year for something different.I went to the nursery yesterday for some toms as my ws didn't do well.Low and behold theres the beans I gave away, only they are not beans there.....squash.

Someone please tell me they have id problems too! I have a better system to label now but that doesn't help with the babies I have now. They all look different than any of the seedling sites I went to.

So anyone have any good, holy cow its a xxxx stories?!?!

That's too funny! I'll bet they will enjoy the squash though just as much as they would have the beans.

Not exactly the same thing, but I have a feeling that later on down the road I'm going to find that I've lovingly transplanted.... WEEDS! (With head hanging down, I'll be muttering things like, "It was supposed to be Datura..." and "Holy Cow! Not another weed???")

And in researching where to place my Blue Fescue Grass, I've fully realized, HOLY COW! What a savings Winter Sowing is! One place wanted $21.95 and $5.00 shipping on a 1 gallon container! I got the seeds for free and have a clump that looks better than the pictures they had!

LOL! Well, I have no stories to add, but I'll admit to being horribly bad at IDing stuff. I've been known, as Cathy says, to lovingly transplant and baby what turns out to be a weed.

As a matter of fact, I've got one on my patio now that is suspicious. I dug it up last year, thinking it looked too darn good to be a weed, and maybe it was a penstemon (although, mind you, I had never planted penstemon anywhere near this spot). I potted it up, overwintered it in my garage, and it has a prominent place on my patio. It is now in bloom, with teeny-tiny little blue blooms, kind of like forget-me-nots, but on long stems. I was actually going to post a pic for an ID, but my computer is down and I'm sure hubby doesn't want pics of weeds on his computer. But I'm pretty convinced by now it is a weed.

But hey, no one who comes to my house would know, so as long as it is in bloom, it stays where it is, lol!

Makes sense to me that it could be the lights. They are plenty hot. I thought it was the ballasts because the gap was at the top of the room, as the ballasts are. But heat rises, and closing off the room trapped it... and RP, you're right, that heat will be plenty welcome from November thru February. Speaking of heating the place up too much, the sun in the south window this time of year makes it stifling hot in my office. So I guess you don't need HIDs to get a room too hot, sun will do it, too.

When sowing Zinnia seeds for bouquets I always sow twice as many white as each individual color. I do this because I use them for cheery bouquets and the extra white ones mixed in helps separate the other colors so they really stand out. Also do the Lilliput variety to add interest to the bouquet along with Statice to add a different shape. There are many Hostas around so I often cut some big leaves where the absence won't be noticed and use those in the Zinnia vase. In addition, there is a lot of invasive English Ivy that I cut and let trail out of the vases, looks real pretty and that lasts from vase to vase, no need to toss the ivy stems every time you redo your bouquets. Here is a great flower vase preservative recipe I got from one of the GW forums: I gallon water 2 T. sugar (I melt it in the microwave in a little water) 2 T. white vinegar 1 t. bleach Mix it all together in a plastic detergent jug and use it in your flower vases. The flowers stay nice for a full week. Always remember to strip the stems to water level so leaves don't touch or sit in the water. Zinnias give us so much beauty for so little work. maryann .. do expect some burning of the leaves already there .... then wait for the next flush ... ALWAYS REMEMBER .... hosta are shade TOLERANT .... more sun is always better ... but then the issue evolves into how ugly they are later in the season ... ugly or not.. they will all grow better in more sun ... ALL problem plants ... given enough water .. will grow vigorously in sun ... when they are bigger.. then move them back to shade ... its like that old movie ... grow the roots in sun.. and they will come ... once you have a decent plant.. with a good root mass.. then move it back into shade.. and it will have an easier time competing .. ken

Hey Daylily Lovers, If no one has an objection, I will get a July swap together. If someone else is already planning something, by all means, do your's because I've never done this and will probably goof. Here's what I'm planning... A freedom swap. I thought we could trade daylilies that have the words red, white, or blue in them or are that color. I've never seen a true blue daylily but many have the word blue in it, an example would be Blueberries and Cream. There's not many true whites, so cream, light yellow etc. is acceptable. If you have one of each name or color that would be great, that's best, but if you only have 3 that have red, but no white or blue, that's okay too. You may send as many daylilies as you want, but you must send at least 3 different kinds hopefully to fit into a patriotic theme. Also check your buddies list for special wants and fulfill any that you can. Lets make this a special month for as many as we can. If you want to participate in the Freedom Swap, I will need to know by July 10th and will get everyone partnered up. I will send out individual e-mails giving all group members a chance to participate in case some are not checking the site. ALL boxes must be received by JULY 31st unless you have made prior arrangements with your partner. In the meantime, here's some photos of my daylilies. Budsnblooms

I have no doubt I'm babying lots of weeds right now. I'm scared to pull anything though. I didn't mark any of my annuals cause I thought I would remember where I put what. Yikes - I haven't a clue what I did yesterday. What was I thinking!

I traded for "Mexican Mint", which I thought was Tagetes lucida aka "Mexican Mint", "Texas Tarragon". It came up like gangbusters, but once it got its true leaves, it just didn't look right to me. I googled "Mexican Mint" and it turns out that Salvia divinorum, the "legal high" plant, is also known as "Mexican Mint"...

Mines more of a dumb blonde moment more than anything, and the fact that I did it twice, makes it worse.

I mentioned before, I think it was one of my first planting out that I tought I planted toms, but realized later that they were sweet william.

Well the other day, I strategically placed out each indiviual sweet pea seedling (oh, about 30 of them) I spent over an hour planting these guys delicately. When I was done, I went to my back porch to see what else could be planted out. I picked up one jug and looked inside, took a double take, re-checked the tag, and what do you know, it was my sweet peas! I ran out front to see what I planted out, it was my dwarf lupines, the one container that I has specific plans for and was holding off planting them out until they were bigger. Needless to say, I dug up each one and after another hour I had them planted where they were going later. (unfortuantly only half have survived) Then waited for the next day to plant out those sweet peas. I still can't figure out how I mixed them up, the sweet peas were almost 4" tall, where as the dwarf lupine was only in seed leaf stage, not even an inch tall!

So anyone have any good, holy cow its a ... stories
