Thanks for the reply! I have plenty of yard space for them to grow large. I have about 8 or 9 of them in the front yard and several in the back yard. I'm just wondering if I should do something about the one on the septic tank. Theyre good lookin, I hate to cut one down, but I also hate to have plumbing problems later.

If you ever need to get at the tank having a tree on top of it could be a nuisance.

I just had my septic tank pumped. I'd remove the Juniper while it's still small.. On the drainfield, no problem.

Yeah it's not on top of the tank, it's on top of the leach field, or the drain field. My concern is the roots going into those pipes and costing me a lot of money. I think I'll just chop it down and be on the safe side.

Juniper roots shouldn't bother your leach field. I would say never bother your leach field but never say never. Juniper roots pretty much stay near the surface and aren't aggressive water seekers. I wouldn't hesitate planting Junipers on my leach field.

Ok, thats the kind of info I'm looking for. Id hate to cut them down because I have them all evenly spaced around the perimeter of the yard and it looks great. Hmm what to do what to do lol.

when thinking of a multiple thousand dollar new septic drain field.. i surely wouldnt take long for me to cut a 10 dollar plant flush to the ground.. and walk away ... what is your base soil type???

besides the fact.. that you seem to have planted a monoculture.. and when the next juniper plague comes along.. you have the potential to lose them all ...

get rid of them.. i know it.. you know it.. there really isnt any real drama involved ...

Im in southern new mexico. Snows maybe once a year here. We are on old farm land so soil is good as long as we water. Its like a mix of sandy clay here. I live on 14 acres so large trees are not a problem.

I have some trees close to my drain field and get nervous. I put copper sulfate down every few months and hope that will stop problems. There are several products to protect drain fields, however I trust copper sulfate. This kills roots back about a foot from the source. Look on the net. Lots of info. on this problem.

Roots are opportunists. They grow where conditions are favorable, and grow poorly or not at all where they are not. They grow where they find ample moisture, but don't go exploring in search of it - same with nutrients and especially air, which is most often what determines the depth to which they will/can grow. Plants with notoriously shallow roots will populate the entire soil volume in a 250 gallon fuel oil drum if the soil is well-aerated.
