help with MBR color
Comments (9)Hit send too soon! If you don't have your furniture of bedding picked out yet, I would stick to a fairly neutral color. If you like the browns, maybe something a little softer and not so dark. There are several pics in the beautiful gallery Oceanna put together for bedrooms that have more of a lighter chocolate color. What colors are you painting the rest of the house? When you say you want it to feel like a retreat, what does that mean to you? Close your eyes, do you picture a spa with cool greens and blues? Do you picture a warm fire with golden colors? Check out Oceanna's gallery. It takes a long time to load, but many ideas.(Side note to THANK Oceanna for all her work on the Gallery lately) Here's a few I pulled from there: Lighter Chocolate More Golden Spa like blues Here is a link that might be useful: Bedroom Gallery...See MoreWant to weigh in on MBR paint color?
Comments (8)I have a few contenders propped up on my wall in the MBR right now and one of them is Rich Cream. I may have to step down to something less yellow to be happy with a creamy color. And busy, Gray Wisp is one of the contenders for my sunroom! I'm going to move that sample up to the MBR and see what I think. I had a client a few years ago with Gray Wisp in her large kitchen, and it seemed unusual for a kitchen (to me) but very, very pretty. I actually thought about the Revere Pewter too... aggh... can't decide. I have time, I'm just wishing something would jump out at me as the obvious choice. Usually I'm better at this sort of decision. I have had sick kids at home for two days so all I can do is play with the samples I already have in my house until next week!...See MoreHelp w MBR paint and painting over bed
Comments (2)Hi Donnagwd. First off, I really like your painting & I see why you want to feature it. The Guggenheim is a really great sculptural shape to begin with, but the artist--and you didn't say whose work this is--has a really nice way of handling tonal contrasts, although I gotta say I don't ever remember seeing that stretch of Fifth Avenue quite that empty. Then again, going by the age of the cars, that was a long time ago. You're right about the generic no-color color currently on the walls doing absolutely nothing for the painting, but although I seldom recommend specific paint colors on a public message board, I will say this: if I were you, I'd stay away from the silvery blues & go more toward the warm grays-to-taupes-to-mink brown as a wall color behind your painting, which will, in turn, make the bright sky & pavement & the sunstruck concrete of the museum glow. Repeating one of the high-key blues on the wall will only diminish the painting's luminous quality, not enhance it. As far as your furniture & lamps go, I don't like those twin mirrors any more than you do, but even though the 7Os weren't my favorite period of design, I really like your lamps. Then again, while that shape may have been popular during the decade, it's been around a lot longer than that--just not as lamps. But it's an ancient form, and therefore worth keeping, and I also like the way the shades echo the shape of the museum, except upside down. Such subtle nuances are what makes a room interesting, and don't tell me you didn't even notice the similarity of shape before. You just didn't recognize it consciously. So that's the good news--that the specific contents of your room (minus those twin mirrors) are just fine, and that the painting is a winner. Now for the bad news: your husband is right about the painting being too small for that huge bed. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day, and in this case, it's your husband who's on the money. Who woulda thunk it? Anyway, I'd find another spot to hang the painting--maybe even in another room--and I'd find something r-e-a-l-l-y wide to put over your bed. Maybe an Asian scroll on a gold background; maybe a length of 7Os-modern fabric laid horizontally; maybe a really long & skinny tree branch with dead leaves still attached; maybe a paper sculpture from a local art show. Or maybe I'd just leave that wall blank. Not every wall needs something on it, and FLW was a master of using negative space to balamce a room. What I wouldn't do is use a handsome piece of art in a place where it's just going to be overpowered--which is what that bed is going to do--and having a David-&-Goliath struggle going on right above my head at night isn't going to make for the restful scheme you're wanting. BTW, now's your chance to win psychologial points with your DH by whispering the three words that every man longs to hear: "You were right." It will make him more likely to give in next time around, when he, like most husbands when it comes to aesthetic matters, is totally clueless. This round, though, he wins. Never fight a battle you know you can't win. Regards, Magnaverde....See MoreHelp! Need new WTs in the MBR!
Comments (18)mleaving_Marji: Thanks for the detailed specs for the measurements. I do prefer a center draw as they are presently. Here is a better picture from before when they still looked good: Overall I have decided I'd like to keep the same orientation, dimensions on the wall and similar color (other possibility I am considering would be a ivory/tan linen). After getting a quote for custom window treatments (WTs) from JC Penney's I am back to debating the grommet top drapes with sheers layered below. I now realize my inner rod can be placed closer to the wall, esp. if I do not require a traverse rod, and so the outermost rod need not extend so far. Are grommet drapes really not practical for daily opening and closing? I could do that for about 1/4 the price of the JC Penney's draperies and I don't think I'll find a much better price elsewhere. These are the ones I am considering which is similar to what I have now (the sage/moss green color): I could get similar fabric in custom, which I like now, but would then feel locked into using for many years; then I wonder if it'd be safer to get an ivory color - but does it really make sense to spend so much on something that I don't really love? With the grommet top ones, I could always change them 3-4 years from now if I feel the need for a change. It must seem like I am very indecisive. I just don't want to make another expensive decorating mistake as even without custom these is a sizable expense once you factor in the rod(s), sheers and outer drapes....See Morejust_terrilynn
