when I prune my frangipani I just cut at the height I can reach. They are a tough tree and seem to respond fairly well to butchering. On Moffat Beach in Queensland there's a tree with a trunk about 80-100cm wide that was attacked with a chain saw - at what looks like head height and it's coming back famously - there was a full skip of "off cuts" taken away after the butcher with the chain saw had finished last september - its flowering now.

I will only tell you what we did with ours, here in Oklahoma. First of all the tree was overgrown... too tall for my liking since we have a very small back yard. I had read a book by Ann Ralph, "Grow a Little Fruit Tree". You can Google it if interested. She and several other Nursery people advocate summer pruning to control height. The idea is that if pruned at the summer solstice, about June 21, the tree has used up most of it's winter stores for strong growth. June is the time to prune for height and winter prune to take out all growth that is crowding the center. We now have a four year old peach that is 6' tall and loaded with fruit. It has 4 scaffold limbs that are maxed out at about knee height. If I were doing this again with a younger/smaller (5/8 caliper) tree I would take it down even lower so we could have more fruiting wood within that 6' to 7' height. Another thing to look at would be videos made by Dave Wilson Nursery on this subject. Google "backyard fruit". Hope this will give you some ideas to think about.

The first tree, I'd take out the vigorous verical branch (on right then left), all the way back to the main trunk leaving no stub. For the second tree, I have to wonder if one trunk is the desired variety, and the other trunk might either be the desired variety or might also be the rootstock sending up a giant "sucker". My guess is that both are what you want, but the tree was simply planted too deep with the graft union underground, in which case you can just take one of the two out, your choice, or even leave them both, however then you will run into issues a year or two down the road when the trees are bigger and they are constantly bumping into one another. Anyway... not knowing at this point whether one tree is the kind you want while the other might not be, it *might* be best to let both of them fruit before making your final decision. Just leave them for another year or two. If they already fruited last year, then you'll already have this answer and can eliminate one as needed. Good luck!

three newly-planted ==>>> i would not have pruned a new transplant.. for at least a year.. and maybe two .. so the tree had food making machines .. leaves.. to grow a root mass to support the newly planted tree ... you need to start thinking in tree time.. which is years if not decades ... not out current world of instant gratification ... i am sure orchard peeps do things much differently than i would ... in tree time.. a bad pruning cut means little ... presuming the trees live ... they will outgrow it .... ken
