California growers, how do you keep senecio from rotting in summer?

After many attempts to keep senecio alive through summer, i think i finally did it (both mandraliscae and vitalis ).

The problem is that i don't know why i failed before and what i did differently. These plants have been growing all of last summer and winter, and now that summer is just around the corner, i thought I'd ask for pointers. I've heard the trick is to not let them go into summer dormancy (keep soil moist all summer), others say the trick is to not water while it's hot, and others suggest letting them go into dormancy, but providing some afternoon shade.

Any tips from other growers in inland California? I know these can go all year long without supplemental irrigation in coastal areas.
