Austin, TX - Grass Advice?
Comments (15)Watering frequently is only done when you are establishing new sod or new seed. Once the roots are knit into the soil, then you back off to infrequent watering. If you revert to frequent watering, then you will have all the weed seeds germinating. Which to get, St Aug or Zoysia? Look around your neighborhood for the successful lawns and go with the flow. I can almost guarantee you they are either bermuda (in full sun) or St Aug (full sun or shady). If you can find any successful zoysia lawns, ask the owner how long they have had it and would they do it again? Ask how often they water, mow and fertilize. I think you'll have trouble finding successful zoysia in Central to South Texas. I have a patch of zoysia but I am always in fear of it. Every week I expect it to go dormant...FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON. That's a funny thing about it. Once it goes dormant for any reason, it remains dormant no matter how much water or fertilizer you apply. I find it to be a fickle grass. But then in the spring it awakens like new. Last year my zoysia was dormant from about June 2011 through February. Since I only have a small patch it doesn't get the same care as the large part of the lawn. I've seen several zoysia lawns installed in upper middle class homes. All but one of those has converted to St Augustine before the end of the first season. The other one is going on 3 years now. Last year's drought, heat, and arid winds hit them hard, and they have a lot of weeds this year. We'll see what they do. In any case I don't consider it a pretty lawn and never have. So I'm obviously trying to persuade you to go with the grass that 99% of the non-bermuda lawns use....See MoreAustin, TX...first visitor!
Comments (22)Penny, I have seen that show but haven't been to that site...guess I just don't have a very original nickname! Richard...I'm actually Northwest of Austin, Leander area, I'm surprised you haven't seen more. However, my husband works from home and we just started heating the pool for the year so like two little children we spend just about every waking moment out in our back yard! At this point they don't seem to be hanging about much so I think the few I'm seeing are really passing thru on their way further north. By far our most popular plant/feeder combo was the Pride of Barbados...it got to be about 9' tall last year and the flowers combined with the feeder tucked away in it's branches was a terrific draw. This year we've planted an additional one, plus the coral honeysuckle, and I'm our to locate some smaller things to put into pots and scatter about. Are you seeing many wildflowers South yet? last year I remember TONS of them and I thought that coincided with the majority of the hummers...this year I've only seen a few so far....See MoreNew Pool Build in Austin, TX
Comments (9)Newpool, I saw your post and things are looking good for you as well. We built a pool with the same builder about 4 years ago and pricing is more than then, but still in line with inflation. I am not sure we got a better deal due to the economy, maybe a little, but I think the pool is being built more timely because they are not as busy building pools. Our cost is right around 40K which is about where we wanted to be. We went with the Stonescape for look and longevity over plaster which added to our cost. We also decided to go a little wider once we saw the pool laid out in the yard, so that added to our cost as well. They put the gunite in yesterday, so now it is really looking like a pool. They will be starting the stone and tile work tomorrow. Comments (26)I finished aerating my lawn on Saturday, and I put down (12) bags of Milorganite after aerating. I can't wait to see what this does for the lawn. I made a separate post for the aerating, and I will continue to post here once I continue with the leveling project. I have some pictures of the back yard that I took after I cut the grass on Friday (before aerating), that I am going to try to post here. I also took a couple of pictures of the weeds I need help identifying that I will post separately....See MoreLynnNM
