Week-end patio cooking/dining updates
Comments (21)Compumom, I'm sure you could grow the same plants in your neighborhood, but they are a bit labor intense to maintain, especially when we do not have rain. I'm glad you like what we've done to the yard, especially since you actually been in my pergola! Here's a picture of a piece of grape wood that we bought and glued tillandsias on. If you are growing grapes, this is something you can do with leftover grape vines. Dcarch, you can see the other hummingbird feeder in this photo. I hesitated to post this photo because I did hear about the East Coast weather this morning and had not realized that it was that cold there. Colleen, the teak furniture that we bought at The Teak Warehouse was made in Thailand or Indonesia, and so I'm not surprised that you SIL has the same table in Australia. Cathy, I have had to maximize use of the yard because it is fairly small, I think. We still have enough yard to make it seem spacious, however, and we would like to do more entertaining. I spend a lot of time in the pergola, mostly just relaxing, and so began to focus on what I liked and didn't like, and I also noticed that the grapevine was taking up valuable shade space, which would be better used by bromeliads and orchid cactus. Most of the yard is too sunny for those plants. When we first moved in, there were quite a few sore spots that I had to addres right away, just to make it tolerable - the first being the white concrete patio. Once we stained that, the space was really transformed and much more inviting. There used to be a stepping stone path from the patio to the pergola on the other side, but it has been covered with grass. We're considering whether to excavate that. Improving the yard makes me want to cook outside more, and Kevin always helps me with that. Lars...See MoreIt's porch and yard time! (PIC heavy)
Comments (60)AJ, is that Honeysuckle? How pretty! Our's is blooming now, it's white, but the blooms don't last long then it looks like weeds. I grow Petunias but they don't do well. Everything I grow is super easy. Everything I plant blooms profusely all summer. If not, I won't plant it. lol Knock Out Roses- Floribunda Roses (my first year) Cosmos (first year and they've tripled in size already) Carpet Roses- Zinnias Coneflowers Tickseed or coreopsis Hydrangea, the easy one, forget it's name. Dianthus, the real colorful mounds you see Impatiens for shady areas Caladium, which I'll be planting more of. They thrive in front of the porch with morning sun. I still have other plants to buy! My dh planted a large plot of wildflowers so I can't wait to see them. They're on the other side of the garage which you can't see in the picture....See MoreNew Birdhouse!
Comments (15)Wow how exciting to get a tiller!! If I had one I'd be unstoppable . I had no idea bluebirds prefer aged wood! I wouldn't mind putting a few more up next spring , assuming they share their territory . We had swallows in the eaves under our deck for a few years but I haven't seen them this year :( I do hope they return. Thats awesome your roses are blooming! Please share pics. :) I'll do the same when mine start. I have some buds but not many yet. The honeysuckle is gold flame , it's one of my favorite . When it is in full bloom I'll get pictures. I sure am enjoying some nice weather ! I was able to plant day Lily's that came, liaratis bulbs, roses and do some transplanting of roses. Last year I planted a lot in my yard not in beds, and the lawn got away from me . Started to smother bands, and some were carelessly run over. :( I was pregnant all summer so I was very limited in what I could do! I had no energy let alone ability to bend over! Lol so I moved the roses from the lawn to beds and will get them some amendments soon. I can't wait to get mulch and some filler plants ! :) ps- trying to post pics, when I select from my phones library it didn't post it? Any ideas?...See MoreSlightly OT - Are you a garden bling junkie?
