Hi Elly, I would dearly love to have a couple of you Amaryllis bulbs if you still have some. I live in East Texas and they will grow just fine here. I've never seen any Amaryllis that looked like that. I don't have alot to trade. I lost a great many of my plants due to all the rain we had here in East Texas during the months of May, June and July. It rained EVERYDAY in May and June. Then every couple of days in July. Needless to say most of my beloved plants drowned. My cannas and Elephant Ears loved all the water. Your probably bang on with the cedars however they will take a long time to fill in an area. They don't require a lot of work compared to a vine generally speaking. I certainly don't recommend vines to fill your need because the privacy they give would generally be subject to the season. Below are some comments on the ones I have experience with. Most of the summer one of my chain link fences gets covered in Clematis Tangutica. I think it was called Clematis Bill MacKenzie. Its an amazing mess of yellow flowers. The nice thing with Bill MacKenzie was how fast it fills in during the spring over my other vines. I do have other clematis but nothing as bushy and filling as Bill MacKenzie. You could also look at Virginia Creeper but be careful as it can get out of control very fast. The neighbor behind our house has his crawling over his back fence snaking through the back lane and strangling parts of my garden. If you don't mind planting annuals every year you could try morning glories depending on the size / height of the area you want to cover. I've had good experience with morning glories all over my limited space. I'd seriously consider a long term investment though like cedars or some other type of bush. Evergreens for your area will give you all season privacy. Or if winter privacy isn't a big deal consider an edible bush like saskatoons. Well my 2 cents.

Passiflora incarnata (the native passiflora which it will cross with) you get fruit which is tasty. Passiflora will sprout up in the lawn but you can just mow them down. If you are feeling cheap I'd go with Hyacinth bean. It grows fast, is very pretty, and will die back in the winter. Both will attract butterflies and you will get caterpillers from them. You can plant something like a climbing rose too, that will slowly cover the pergola. Nasturtiums are fast and nice (for maximum speed go with a climbing, nonvariagated variety). They are edible too. Wisteria is nice but a bit too vigorous. If you go with it get the Wisteria Floribunda (Japanese) NOT the Chinese one. You can also go with the native wisteria, which is pretty in an understated fashion.

Mine isn't orangy; the photo I posted is true to color on my monitor. It is the truest red I have in my garden, really not on the blue or orange side of things. It will surely get large enough - mine is over 8' now (after 5 years in poor soil after starting as a tiny rooted cutting), and MOBOT says that it can grow to 15'. Mine is restricted by the 5' height of the obelisk. I am not sure why many sites suggest 8' tall and 12' wide - perhaps they are going on the height of the trellis. You will need to give it something for the twining stems to wrap around, perhaps wires.
