Houston..Guess what? I felt the same way about my figs! I had a couple and they are not as sweet as many rave them to be to me, and I let them fully ripen. I was told the older the tree, the sweeter they get. Oh I hope so. Mine are only about 2-3 feet tall. I hope someday to get a VERY sweet one. Keeping my fingers crossed. You can have the cooler weather.lol It's depressing to wake up 5 days out of the week with cloudy skies and temps below normal. I get enough of that in the Spring, Fall, and Winter. Our summers are shrinking while just one state away they are boiling. Strange I'll say! Protect your trees for sure in that. I hope you have a pool. Josh! Well, would you look at that! You must still use some source of heat for those cold nights, or at least put the windows up. Wow. Well, I can understand why certain plants may be an issue for you there. My weather is much warmer than yours, but still I have a problem with some of the plants you mentioned too. But despite them odds, what you grow still seems to relish in your care. Well, standard potting mix is fine (not moisture control-because it holds too much water). The cactus mix is actually good to mix with standard mix because it helps drainage. Avos want damp (not water-logged) soil. Do not pot up soil from your garden.

When the leaves die from the tips like that, the cause is lack of water. If it's old growth, it could have been a one-time stress that just left its scar. If new growth is lso browning, you have an ongoing problem. Before you think more water is the answer, you need to keep in mind that that lack of water (to the plant) could be caused by root damage. Avocados are especially susceptible to root rot if the soil is watered too regularly. I'm also just north of LA. I find that a 20 minute soak once a week - maybe twice when the temperatures get toward the upper 90s - is all the water my avocados need. The soil dries out between waterings. The root rot fungus dies back, but the avos can take it. If you have been watering daily, let the soil dry out a bit. What kind of soil do you have, and how is the drainage? In my hard clay soil, I started growing avocados by digging my holes 4 ft diameter and 3 ft deep, and mixing the clay 50-50 with organic matter. Wire gopher baskets too, just like yours. Even those measures were not enough. The clay just became a 4' diameter pot that retained the water and drowned my trees. I needed to dig drainage ditches from my holes in the downhill direction, and backfill the ditches with 50-50 OM too.

Your plant is doing extremely well considering it is eventually doomed (insufficient light and air circulation is the usual problem for indoor avocados). Just keep doing what you're doing and enjoy it while it's there and see how long you can keep it going. BTW seedling avocados can take up to ten years to produce any fruit.
