I have washed mine many times. They are all several years old now. I do use dryer sheets but, they are unscented. They just have a nicer feel with the dryer sheets. Never had an odor.

I've washed both of our Vellux blankets several times and never had an unpleasant odor. Ours get washed and dried in our own machines here at home. Maybe the machines you used at a public Laundromat weren't really clean inside.

Vellux is a synthetic fabric, its nylon, and like all synthetics it is water resistant. When you wash it make sure its in a large enough washer to allow it to move freely, in addition use extra water along with a healthy dose of detergent. ..add extra rinses.

I'm wondering about prior laundering because new textiles are treated with different chemicals now days, if it was manufactured out of the US than you can bet it was treated with insecticides among other chemicals. It takes several washings to remove it all.

A lot of our stuff had a smell from being in storage after the flood. I add just a little bit of odorban in the detergent drawer of my front loader and it takes away any odors and leaves a very clean smell.
