I think (hope) doctors today have the mindset of sparing what organs they can. I've read/heard arguments on both sides of the story. Here's some info from the wall street journal health journal: Cutting Less More doctors are challenging the convention of removing the cervix during a hysterectomy. Here's why: * Pap smears have sharply reduced the incidence of cervical cancer. * Sparing the cervix reduces the risk of bladder damage. * Some doctors say it may improve sexual function. Some 600,000 hysterectomies are performed in the U.S. every year, making it the second-most common women's surgery after Caesarean section. It is done to remove cancers of the uterus or cervix, or more commonly to treat a painful condition called endometriosis or because of noncancerous uterine growths called fibroids. Prior to 1940, nearly all hysterectomies preserved the cervix because it was easier and safer given the lack of antibiotics and blood banks. But by the 1960s, removing the cervix, viewed as a cancer preventative at a time when Pap smears were still fairly new, became standard. Now the tide appears to be turning. In 2006, 9.7% of U.S. inpatient hysterectomies, which account for more than 90% of the procedures, preserved the cervix, compared with just 1.7% a decade earlier, according to federal data. ------- Just sharing that info, not saying they are right. I have a friend, and in her family all the women but her were in full menopause by 40... she was done at 42. BUT I'd check with the gyno to be sure. I am 42, and have been going strong since 40. Always good to check with the gyno to be sure something else isn't going on, like a tumor on the ovary or something....

Hi i girls. I'm kind of new here (I signed up a while back to talk about holly trees that were sick, lol, now I'm here to talk about menopause). Yes, the zest for life in general can sometimes feel like a complete zero for me too but I try to surround myself with positive things to combat that. My pets, good friends, my gardens, of course, and forcing myself to take more of an interest in my job. I'm a legal secretary. I think it's all a matter of mind over matter because all of the above seems to be working. I logged on because I was looking for advice/help in dealing with the physical changes. That muffin top that appeared out of nowhere to the point where none of my clothes fit anymore! It's driving me nuts. I've always enjoyed a waistline and now it doesn't exist anymore. In the past six months it's all but disappeared. I googled menopausal bloating and it appears to be a very real thing that I'm going to tackle with a vengeance. If anyone here has any hints or advice on how to deal with this I'd be grateful. I've never had a weight problem and never had to diet, which I'm very thankful for. I'm 5'3" and was always in the 112-116 area. This extra flab around my waist is really bothering me and when I learned that the body transfers fat from your hips and thighs to your waist I was shocked. I had no idea that was part of this miserable thing called "menopause". Any advice is welcome. Feel better ladies. You're not alone and I hope you all find peace in this incredibly difficult journey. Antidepressants do help with coping with many menopausal symptoms, and there are so many different ones. Ask your doctor which one might be helpful for your symptoms and whether it is safe to take for a long period of time, as some women do remain symptomatic for several years after they are no longer having periods.
