What I now know about Persicarias that the descriptions don’t tell you

I got interested in Persicaria affine and P. amplexicaulis cultivars because of their deer resistance, groundcover, and weed suppressing qualities. So I planted three last fall and have three more coming this week. The fall planted ones began to leaf out nicely; then we had hard freeze, nothing extraordinary, just a typical West Virginia drop to 28 or so. None of the other perennials that were up were bothered--Peonies, Nepetas, Salvias, Agastaches, Geraniums, Clematis, daylilies, everything imaginable in the shade garden, etc--were fazed, but the Persicarias were totally knocked back. Not a great trait for something I was planning for groundcovers. They'll recover, but will look awful for awhile. Will I run around covering them down the road? Probably not.

The kind of thing they just don't tell you. The Deutzias did exactly the same and I got rid of all of them.
