LOL - no thanks! I'm pretty OK with being an only, although caring for an aging parent, solo (well, my darling husband helps) can be tough. However - I bet if I had siblings, I'd still be the one taking care of him. :)

I have two 'halves' somewhere, but I was raised as an 'only', by an 'only'. I married an 'only' (who turned out to have four sibs). We raised an 'only'.

As 'onlies' born to older mothers, DH and I were them long before our contemporaries had the same experiences with their parents.

Having sole responsibility is wearing, but also freeing. Nobody is second-guessing you. (You have to do that yourself.)

I have 2 brothers but I feel like an only child. They don't come visit the elderly parents (in their mid 90's) until the word "hospice" gets mentioned. They just let me handle it. So it might be sibling day, but they won't get any high praise from me. And I won't get any from them, I'm sure.

I am the eldest of 6 and unfortunately one of my brothers died a number of years ago. I'm the one who deals with my mom who has Alzheimers and is finally in a care facility. Unfortunately my sibs have never understood how much time and energy it takes to care for one with Alzheimers, I have little contact with them now.

I won't be celebrating National Siblings Day.

I am the oldest of my fathers kids, and the second oldest of my mothers. We have a black sheep in the family, but the rest of us get along pretty good. My sisters and I pretty well agree on everything about my mother, and when my youngest brother took care of dad (before his death) we all backed him up too.

We were so busy while I was in Germany, we never got a decent picture of us. But here are three I posted here before:

I have 4 sisters. One is black sheep, but I get along with the other 3; am closest with my older sister. She never had kids and sort of leads the pack (as she always has). I came after her.

Imstillcloecat, I wish my daughter had your perspective. As a single mother, raising one was hard enough to do, even working 2 jobs, I couldn't afford anymore (but didn't really want anymore either). She's made it pretty clear to me that it wasn't fair for me to do that to her and it breaks my heart to know she feels that way.

My sister, brother and I are really enjoying each others love and kinship now that we are all retired. Our working lives had us living hundreds of miles apart with so little time to be together. Now we live in a triangle of about 90 miles from my home in either direction to either my brother or sister and the same for them to each others or my home. We rediscovered the family rapport we missed all those years and value so much the times we have together now.

I have one sibling, a sister. For years I'm pretty sure she wished she were "an only."

About 15 years ago she moved 700 miles away, and lo & behold, we get along so much better. I hear from her about once a month.

When the time comes to take care of our Mother, I know it'll be my responsibility. (One I'll gladly carry out.)

Growing up I'm sure there were times I wish I had siblings but it worked out ok. My cousins and my husband's siblings, cousins, our nieces and nephews are like siblings to me. :)

Wish I still had my 2 siblings. Both of my older brothers passed a long time ago. My oldest brothers was 56 & my other brother was 50 when they died. There was 5 years between us because my Mom lost quite a few babies in between each of us. I was the baby she was not suppose to have.

Lukkiirish, that's sad. I don't know how old your daughter is, but I'm thinking she'll have more empathy with your position when she has a child--or children--of her own.

lukkiirish, my daughter is an only, as well. She's fine with it. We come from a long line of onlies (my mother was also an only). I'm sorry your daughter resents you.

LOVE Y'ALL!!! I'll be be your "real life sibling", as in, I love y'all like a sister. I'm here for ya.

I have a younger brother and a younger sister. We get along great! When Mom fell ill last year my brother cancelled his trip to Florida (we were all ready there) and took care of everything. Did a great job. Sister lives in Montana, so was not an option to help, she did fly in and was great support while moving Mom into an apartment.

We came home early from Florida, but Mom continued to go down hill. Brother John was a lot of help. I lived 3 hours away (he was 2 hours the other direction) and would come into town and take over every 10 days so I could go home and recharge.

Sister Lynn flew in when I called and told her it was time. She was so happy she had been in town earlier in the year to spend quality time with Mom.

My sibs are the greatest!!!!

Another only here. I have two kids but they each have an only.

I have 4 sisters and had one half brother whom we lost too soon. His children and step child visit us regularly though, from Denmark, thank goodness. We sisters get along for the most part. The ones here in Canada are getting along better as we age, which is nice. The sister in the U.S. is very involved in her career. So not as close to the rest of us. She has an only.

3 out of 5 of us have children. The 2 of us here with children each have 2. My niece is pregnant with her first child. :)

Its not always fun having a sibling like what I have.

He is a runner who runs and isn't there fully, even when he did come out, it was me living with our parents in my own place coping with everything and he couldn't care less one little bit as he didn't even close at all and had his own life in his own world.

And being executor, he was the one in charge even when not around of things going and they wouldn't listen to me due to not being executor and so that is a problem with doctors,etc. a huge problem.

And losing our dad he left his wife do whatever and couldn't care less what I tried to say or anything and needed help with our mother with her issues. And I kept saying you need to do something and I can't as they won't listen to me and again they weren't around so forget it and ignore and go traveling and doing their life in their own world.

He did bits but not enough for me.

I always wanted a sister but wondered would it have been different with the kind of our mother and her issues, don't know but so many I knew had sisters to go shopping and out with and have so much fun with.

I had to disown my brother doing what he did to me and allowing his wife too the things she did and still doing and will never forget, this is so unforgetable what brother is doing and did.

My two younger brothers have passed away, my sister (I'm the oldest) lives 7 hours away. when Mom was battling cancer I did all I could to help mom and step dad. I brought mom home on hospice when she slipped into coma and I stayed with her those 2 days caring for her those two days before her passing, my sister drove in for a visit, they, her and boyfriend stayed at a local hotel where they spent more time at than at moms side. The doctors told sis 2 days at most, but sis boyfriend needed to go do to work...I ask my sister..please stay with me, I'm scared...sis said...I can't, I have to be where my man is....I rarely talk to my sister, not because of her leaving when needed, but pretty much because she doesn't like me and only has time for her man. If I call I get no answer or return call..if I text its ignored...I'm greatly saddened by this, but life goes on....but, sometimes I think to myself were the only two siblings left and parents are gone...those are the times I most likely would try to contact her without success. ...I still have times when I think she's my sister and all I have left from my childhood..but I no longer try to contact her. I suppose I will always wonder why..I loved her, I tried to be a good sister, I took good care of her as a child, but as adults...its like a dream, the past, with my little sister following me everywhere...I envy folks with loving relationships with siblings...guess you could say I'm a only.

My parents were in their 40's and had raised one family, when I came along. My sibs were either married or in the military by the time I was old enough to notice, so I was more or less raised an only. I did have a niece and nephew near my age that I was close to but when my nephew as 17, he went in the navy and my niece very suddenly moved to west Texas to be a nanny. I found out many years later that she was pregnant. I don't know any more than that, but life wasn't the same with them gone. I really, really missed them. My father died in '68. He had brain cancer and didn't last but about a month after diagnosis. My oldest brother was in the army but he got an emergency leave to come home and took care of him. I am forever grateful because I was there, trying to help and I was so young myself, I couldn't have done what he did.

However, my mother lived into her mid 90's and I took care of her with absolutely no help from my sibs. Oldest brother was in Indiana then but my brother and sister here did nothing....not even coming to see her but a time or two. Of course, by the time she was in her 90's, they were in their 70's, so not a lot they could have done but to visit her, would have been nice.

I am the only surviving one now. That was to be expected, since they were so much older than me. I have an only. She has chosen not to have children. I support her decision. She and her husband were together 12 years before they got married about 3 years ago. They are very happy and I am happy for them. I am used to being by myself. My husband works long hours and we were married 15 years before she was born, so I have always had a lot of time alone. I don't get lonely. I have so much to do, that I never notice I am alone.
