Florence Bower Tea Rose in Florida?
Comments (12)Debbie, did you buy your Florence Bower locally, or mail order? Sherry, I know what you mean about feeling like you were living in the Yearling. I sometimes see deer in my back yard... and turkeys... and rabbits... and racoons, "Oh, My!" Veronica, you are right. I am only about an hour and a half from Angel Gardens. I went there in April for the "Rose Lover's Gathering". It was such a great day. Ruth Knopf and Peggy Martin were there. They both gave wonderful talks, and I won a Peggy Martin Rose in the Raffle. Pam is so much fun to be around, and every place you turn , there are more beautiful roses. I think I've bought about 20 plants from her so far. But the best thing of all is that she suggested I buy this plant she happend to have, and even though it wasnt in bloom, and I had no idea what it was going to look like, I trusted her advice. It's name was Maman Cochet, and when 6 huge blooms opened a week or two later, I actually got "butterflies". It's just so thrilling to have discovered Antique Roses. If I were closer to G'ville, I would join their local HRG, but I joined the National instead. Well, I need to go make some garlic spray. Tamora and Abe Darby have spider mites :>( Cheers everybody! Comments (13)Tom, I'm in Sanford, so a bit north of you, and the freeze we had the first year in this house was hard enough to freeze water in my birdbath solid (about 3" to 4" deep), so I don't know if that qualifies as a mild freeze or not. It was the hardest one we've had since moving here. And the plant had only been in the ground about 8 months or so, so it may not have been established well enough to come back. I seem to remember one branch was TRYING to still be alive when I got impatient and pulled the whole thing out. My guess is that it will often survive the winters in central Florida with no problem, and that an established plant will probably come back. Sort of like most clero's in that regard, I would think. Good luck with yours. It is truly a conversation piece with the butterfly shaped flowers. And they are a nice shade of blue. (How is your bog sage doing, speaking of blue? I never got mine to take! *sniff* But I seem to remember yours was very prolific.) Marcia...See More"Florence Bowers' Pink Tea" update
Comments (20)Nik, yes, it is a found rose, so no known lineage. Here's a link to a long discussion about it two years ago: "Florence Bowers' Pink Tea", with speculation about it being the "true" 'Souvenir d'un Ami'. I do hope you hear from Mrs. Bowers, Jeri. Garden web member "idixierose" tried two years ago and did not hear back, I believe; she did say Mrs. Bowers was in declining health. humble5, the scent is very strong to me, and like the incomparable fruity scent of Mrs. B.R. Cant. She got healthier in the ground than she was in the pot, but I think the time in the pot was important for building up good roots. She's at the edge of the "civilized" (i.e., irrigated) part of this garden in so-so soil -- all the stuff behind her is my "multicultural chaparral", which gets no irrigation....See MoreFlorence Bower's Pink Tea not flowering
Comments (19)That's great news, humble. She was just taking her time being a teenager, and I can't wait to see her this spring. This is a good reminder for me to practice patience with some of my slow growers. With own-root roses you take your chances, that's for sure. Some will bloom when they're a foot tall, others take years. It's even more frustrating when the bush just sits there and refuses to grow while you lavish them with valuable water!...See Morecatspa_zone9sunset14
