Need help with my baby succulent.
Comments (4)Laura, your plant looks like an Echeveria Perle Von Nurnberg. Your plant seems fine, but extremely etiolated (stretched) and thirsty. Etiolation for succulents is an irreversible process, and they are cause by insufficient lighting conditions. What is your location? And what direction are your windows facing? You will need at least 4-5 hours of sunlight a day to keep these type of plants looking tight and pretty in their rosette forms. Personally your mix looks very wet and peaty too. Almost all problems with "wrinkly leaves" or "look their they are dying" begin with poor roots. The No 1 killer for succulents are poor wet water logged soil that usually drown the roots from too much moisture. If you can get access to perlite/pumice I would recommend adding them to your soil. Comments (5)If this was my plant I would cut it from about 2 inches from the top let it callus for a couple days and then plant it. I would also propagate the left over leaves that were left on the stem. I'm sure you know this but make sure you put the freshly cut top and leaves in a dry shady place while you're waiting for them to callus:) Good luck . Ps- that mark on the bottom doesn't look like rot I wouldn't worry about it. Over time no matter how hard you try succulents get damaged somehow someway....See MoreWhat succulents have you grown from seeds?
Comments (22)I am an impatient sloppy kind of person who really is not the cactus seed kind of gal. BUT I do seed out things that I want a bank for outdoors. Or , I grab a seed pod from a plant and throw it in a pot of unsterilized potting mix with a bunch of added perlite. One breeder/botanist type that I used to follow on another form, mentioned that he did not do a lot of sterilizing or special treatment because he wanted the strong seed not the wimpy guys. He wanted the ones that would survive in the wild. HMM. It is amazing that we listen to the person who speaks our language (confirms and validates our defects of character). LOL.Most of my Seeds are free. I only want one cactus normally so I normally buy them wanting immediate satisfaction, but I love my agave and I was driving by that stand of Agave neomexicana west of Artesia New Mexico and the car just stopped itself. Not many viable seed due to a very happy bug inside but I did get some. That was really true about the yuca seeds that I collected. Yucca elata Agave neo-mexicana Nolina texana from on my land but do not germinate as often as I would like since I am planting them all over the place. I grow these every year and put them out. Agave striata from a parent plant on my place. It makes seed every year. I want a bank of them. I am thinking of ordering some seed for A striata 'live wire' or one of the populations that turn pink. I will plant them out doors next spring. There is a Agave bachata in the upper left corner. Dykia from a friend....See MoreSucculent ID and baby care!
Comments (11)Oh boy, you live really close to me. Are you sure the soil dries within 5 days? I thought so too, but it turns out if you leave the stick in for a good 15 mins, you will get a better idea. I have had instances where I thought it was quite dry but turns out it was still wet at the very bottom or around the roots where the soil has really clumped together. This is why I completely gave up on using anything organic. They vary the moisture a lot just by increasing the ratio sligthly. I made my mix every time I potted and realised, some batches stayed wet for a month just because I forgot and used 50:50 instead of 60:40. So I'm just using grit and some kind of clay based gravel. Well it ultimately depends on your climate, I'm not sure how hot or dry where you live is. It was unbearably hot, droughts everywhere, then next week, its floods and landslides everywhere. I don't know what is happening to the climate here. P.S now don't drastically change anything now. Just see how it fares with your current mix. Trail and error, and a lot of patience works best. If it turns out the plant is dying, then you know its your mix. I would say, avoid coco coir/peat. It could contain lots of salt since they process them with saltwater. Unless you know for sure they use freshwater....See Morekamereone
