Dawn's Secret Pal April Gifts Sent & Received
Comments (1)I wanted to thank my secret pal for my March gift. I was unable to thank them for the frame and the great lavender seeds because I was in Hawaii. It was a nice treat to come back to a nice surprise. Thanks again secret pal! Lori...See MoreQuestion for today April 18
Comments (13)I bought a beautiful (so I thought) Hoffman fabric for the background of a Double Irish Chain. It had a deep purple background, with purples, greens, and yellows making up a beautiful, large Iris floral pattern. The quilt was going to be a Mother's Day gift for my Mom...the Iris-growing goddess. I picked out a bright yellow to match the Iris' beards, and a purple batik to form the center chain which was bordered by the bright yellow on each side. I made all the blocks and sewed them together. Thinking I'd tease Mom with the beautiful fabric, I sent her a square of each fabric and a sample pieced together in simple strips. I asked her what she thought of the colors because "I might use them to make something." She said "That's the most horrible fabric and color combination I've ever seen." Gulp. I gathered up the top, the borders, and all the scraps, and gave them to a neighbor. She had admired the partially finished quilt; I told her if she would finish it, it was hers. She was thrilled. Thank goodness. Mom got earrings that year! LOL She still has no clue (and never will have) that I had bought those fabrics and made a top for her!...See MoreBaby gift question for Beagles and Robo
Comments (9)Hmm. It's hard because so much depends on parenting style. E.g. Bastian co-sleep so we wouldn't have used stuff like a white noise machine. On the other hand, one of my fav gifts was a really nice $185 ergo baby sling (the Omni 360), but some babies / parents don't like slings so that wouldn't be of any use to them. That's why people need to register, LOL! What I wish someone had given me was a care package of all the stuff first time parents don't really know they need or think to buy. Like tea tree shampoo for cradle cap; super-soft wash clothes for first bath, tiny baby nail clippers, diaper cream, a wipe warmer, snot sucker, etc. All the stuff you end up realizing you need and have to make a drug store run for at like 8 PM. It could be all packed inside a baby bath tub, or in a little basket they could use as a laundry basket for the endless laundry they will now be doing, LOL. I also absolutely adored the custom onesie from my amazing GW friends that had a type writer on it and said "Once upon a time there was a little boy named Bastian Archer..." I took his first month pictures in that and they are on the cover of his baby book. There were also really cute cards that said "From the library of Bastian Archer" to put in books and then a gift card to get books so I could start his library. I loved the whole story theme and a baby cannot possibly have enough books so you could do something like that. (photo below so you can see how cute it was) Also loved a pre-paid photo session with a great local photographer for newborn/ baby pics that I could schedule at my convenience....See MoreDumb question about gift cards.
Comments (45)Oh sorry - I went off in a different direction. I'm not a big fan of gift cards in general, especially ones that tie you into one specific restaurant or store. I've had a few bad experiences where the cards went unused - in one instance the restaurant closed unexpectedly and I still have one for the Rittenhouse Spa that DH gave me the Christmas before Covid. I can still use it but just haven't felt inclined to book it. Now that the kids are older we've tried to simplify things. They own their own homes and two have children. They have repeatedly commented that they don't need stuff. I don't have a problem with giving them money and we give them checks on Christmas and their birthdays and it is definitely what they want and can use. A few years ago one of the kids set up Elfster- an online gift exchange that his wife uses with her large, extended family. It resembles a Pollyanna - you're matched up with one other family member, a price limit is set and each participant has to suggest things that they would like to receive and they can even include a link to the actual item. This is the third year and it's worked out well and is helpful in eliminating the 'stuff' factor....See MoreOutsidePlaying
