Best nursery to buy tropical fruit trees like mango, sapota, near LA

Hi all, we live in Torrance. I am interested in growing fruit trees like Mango(is Keitt a good choice?), sapodilla, jamun, Cherimoya, papaya, guava, lemon, pomegranate, avocado, plum, nectarine etc. I am looking for a good nursery in & around LA or near San Diego. It will be great if you can suggest a good nursery. My advanced thanks for helping me out!

Champa nursery in El Monte has a lot of tropical and sub tropical cultivars, very knowledgeable owner. And lots of variety. Hey are out of keitt for the season but I bought fruit punch and Mallika mango from them and they had coconut creme mango as well.

h&h nursery in Lakewood is a larger nursery with broader variety of everything... but probably won't have the more rare plants (e.g., champa has miracle fruit and will be getting cacao later this year, h&h doesn't) but I love their overall selection, especially for stone fruit. They also carry a lot of items from Dave Wilson nursery.

Upland nursery in orange has nice but small collection. I have been gotrying my there more recently.

i also recently bought some Really nice plants from plantogram in Florida and toptropicals in Florida -- both have nice online store fronts, delivery a bit expensive but it seems a lot of the tropical sand subtropicals at local nurseries come from Florida anyways.

If you can drive down to San Diego to ONG nursery it is worth it. It's just a house in a neighborhood but the entire place is PACKED with plants, like a tropical food forest jungle. They have EVERYTHING (or very nearly so).

Closer to LA you might check out Paradise Nursery.

Nurseries in San Diego with Asian veggies and rare fruit trees. In my opinion one of the best is the Bonita Creek Nursery, they have a huge selection! http://www.bonitafruittrees.com David, the owner, is GREAT and the fruit is super. They have Avocado, Cherimoya, Cherry, Sapote, Guava, Figs, Mangos, Berries and many other trees. The nursery is in Bonita, just 15 minutes from down town San Diego by car. Have fun! Hi altadenamara, I use the the red formula, I actually spoke to the company that makes Dynamite (they have an office here in Sarasota, Florida) a couple of hours away from me. I made sure I spoke to them before I used it since I wasn't sure which of their formula would be better suited for my young, newly planted mango and lychee trees. They told me to use the Red forumula, 13-13-13, and apply it once around the end of Feb or early March (my zone). He said that the red formula is for anything that flowers or fruits. Since I wanted these trees to do well, I researched several fertilizers and decided to go with this one and supplement with Fish and Kelp for an added boost. Here's a pic of what my Glenn Mango looked like when I first planted it March '07 and what it looks like a year later.I guess the fact that it has put out new growths and not flowers, that's probably a good thing, since it is very young. I am very happy with this fertilizer. Like you, I prefer to let my trees get some size before I let it fruit. If you want to chek them out and maybe ask some them which might be a better formula for your zone (CA),I think their website is florikan.com or dynamiteplantfood.com Thanks and good luck with your trees also.

That sounds interesting. I am not familiar with pruning to get mangos to flower?!? Mine was prune only once when it was potted to encourage branching. I would think that pruning would encourage more vegetative growth. There was a post before by one of our members showing a small 8-10 inch seedling that was blooming, it was amazing. Maybe polyembryonic seedlings blooms faster? I have not heard Manilkara zapota called black sapote before. Its more commonly referred to as sapodilla or chico sapote or lamut in Thai. Here's a picture of one in my area. I will be attempting an airlayer on this. You can see the developing fruits in one of the pictures. The picture was just recently taken. I don't know how it would do containerize.

I second the recommendation for Green Thumb in Canoga Park or West Hills and their other store, Green Arrow, in North HIlls. They carry better distributors such as Dave Wilson Nurseries trees but at about 50-60% of the cost for the same tree at Armstrong. They are also bigger, with more stock. I love these guys. Be careful when selecting deciduous fruit trees at ALL Socal nurseries. All nurseries will make trees available that really won't fruit here. In SoCal you require "VERY LOW CHILL" trees -- there are not enough chilly hours in the dormant season to make most trees fruit. So a "low chill" tree that requires 500 or 400 hours is still too high of a requirement. I'm in Northeast L.A where I get 80 to 300 hours of chill per year, so all of the trees that require more than 250 hours will seldom fruit -- only some years. Read those labels!
