New construction kitchen layout. Tell me what is wrong!!
Comments (6)Fridge access has to pass through your prep zone. Not good. Looks like a 30" OTR over a 36" range, which is prohibited by code. You need a 42" hood and figure out another type and placement of MW. After the fridge moves to the end of the run by the mud door, I'd use either a base cabinet to house a MW drawer, or I'd do an upper MW shelf cabinet next to the refrigerator. Swap the DW and trash and consider another trash on the island next to the prep sink. Or, an in cabinet compost bin so that all of the veggie scraps can go straight into that. Overall, this is a really BIG fairly expensive kitchen that needs a fairly large and expensive home to surround it and make it feel size appropriate to the home. And you have a relatively small (for the overall volume) connection to the family room space. That can work well if you want to have some form of separation between the two, such as an open archway or even a series of sliding and stacking glass doors. If you prefer more connection to the family room, then orienting the spaces in another direction with the longer sides intersecting would be a better plan. Also, with your information that the view is to the bottom of the pic, I'd consider re-orienting the entire build to focus on that rather than creating a space that so many will have their backs to when they are in it. The primary cook is the only one in the space with the nice view....See MoreNew Construction Kitchen Layout - Any Ideas?
Comments (11)Okay, so definitely no cooktop in the island. What are opinions on the main sink being in the island? cpartist - Another option. Thank you! If this was your kitchen, would you lay it out this way? If only I had a couple more feet on one side! Then I'd probably want two more.... I am concerned about the amount of counter space around the sink and cooktop. However, if I am thinking this through, you would work from left to right at the sink. Correct? Then work space at the cooktop would mainly be on the right (if you are standing at it). Hot items out of the oven would go to the island? Making school lunches would happen on the island after pulling items from the refrigerator and pantry? Trying to imagine myself and the family using this space. Our double ovens will actually be an oven/convection oven microwave combo. Oven on the bottom and convection oven/micro on top. That being said. Does this place the microwave too far away from the refrigerator?...See MoreNew Construction- Kitchen layout needs help!
Comments (8)Hi guys, thank you for the input and help! bethohio3, that beverage center looks awesome! Thank you so much for that find and recommendation. I think that would look great on that south wall by the stairs. It would also be functional since its closer to eating area and great room. Hopefully we can get that made by our cabinet guy in budget. For questions that Cheryl Heweitt asked: 1.) Do you have a floor plan that has more detail, like what size cabinets and their function? Aisle widths? Unfortunately do not have this yet. Will be getting it from architect in next week or so. 2.) What is the function of the cabinets in the breakfast nook? Again, more detail would be helpful. Not sure what the function would be but were thinking of using as pantry and also as a beverage center for a small bev fridge and such. 3.) Family size? If you have children at home, age ranges? Number of cooks in the kitchen? 2 small kids age 3, family of 4. 1-2 cooks 4.) What kind of cabinets/function are you planning for the island? Your island is really deep. Will there be cabinet access from the back side, too? We specifically wanted a large island as we thought it would be functional and like how it looks. Will have cabinets in it (hopefully on both sides). Use (w/ addition of prep sink now thanks to the feedback here) will be for food prep and also guests to sit at. When I look at your present floor plan I don't find it all that functional due to the refrigerator being so far to the right. If you rotated the island 90 degrees, and added a sink I think it would function more smoothly. I guess it depends on where you expect to do meal prep. My wife and I talked about island orientation for quite a while and we decided not to rotate the island but leave it as is since the north south dimensions of the room are so generous (19 feet) rather that the east west....See MoreNew construction Cabinet/kitchen layout help
Comments (25)Perhaps an outlet in the pantry for a potential microwave? I’m no pro but have very similar needs to you and planning a very similar layout! So I’ll throw some of my ideas at you that I’m using. The RoomPlanner app might be helpful for you (even the free version) to lay it out. Here’s a screenshot from mine. You can’t get specific with cabinets but it still helps. I want a lot of lower drawers as well. On my baking station side I chose to do shelves to break up the cabinets and I’ll do jars of baking ingredients on them. Then to the left of the fridge is a cabinet that will open up and have a counter inside for our blender to sit on, coffee stuff may go there or on the baking station. I wanted the blender close to the fridge. My baking station will be 30” deep instead of standard depth which will make my fridge look like a counter depth fridge, deepen the blender cabinet, and provide me with more usable counter in front of counter top appliances. I’m considering Ikea cabinets with custom fronts from somewhere like Scherrs or Semihandmande I think is the other, or possibly all out custom. If I do Ikea cabinets I’ll just have them installed more forward for the deeper baking station (except for the blender cabinet I’d need a custom solution) and the counter tops will hide the gap. I’d love to see your project progress as it’s so similar to mine but you’re ahead of me!...See Moremama goose_gw zn6OH
