Aloe Vera help
Comments (2)I suspect too much moisture in the soil. If you have some bamboo skewers at home you can stick one in there to see if the soil is wet. Even if it seems dry on top, it could be soaking wet on the bottom, which will lead to root rot. The sand will only contribute to this by holding water between the grains, keeping the soil wet for longer. If you find that it's really wet, I would unpot the whole thing and get as much soil off as possible, and then let it dry out for a couple of days. If you see a lot of black or reddish-brown, squishy roots, or hollow roots, then that's the beginning of rot. Try to get as much of those off as possible, too. If ALL the roots are rotten, cut them all off (and the stem too, if it's rotten). It can grow new ones. In the meantime, you can read some posts here in the Cacti and Succulents forum, and also in the Container Gardening forum, about "gritty mix". Basically, you'd want a soil made of bigger pieces, not small dusty particles. Bigger spaces mean that water can't get trapped, and won't sit in contact with the roots for too long. Good luck! It was my own pot of "inherited" aloe vera plants that led me here in the first place. Now those original plants are having pups of their own!...See MoreSomething is eating my aloe vera plant. Help!
Comments (6)Yep, Dan you are right. I just flipped the light on out on my balcony and sure enough I saw a HUGE mouse or rat run across it. It ran into my storage unit that is connected to my balcony. I'm too freaked out to open that door and see what kind of damage it's done. Yikes! Not sure how to get rid of it/them but hoping maintenance can! Thanks so much as I was on the lookout for those big wood roaches and even put out boric acid. This would explain why I was still seeing the droppings....See MoreAloe Vera help!
Comments (6)Sorry to pls. respectfully disagree w/ the above advice, as to both using sand & large pots. If you were to check nearby at the Cactus & Succulent Forum, you'd see folks discouraging using sand & large pots for succulents grown indoors. No, no, no, no sand pls., it tends to clog the roots & make problems. Sand is no good for plants in pots or containers, especially not for succulents. Since you already have cactus mix, pls. go out & buy some Perlite, mix it 50/50 w/ the Cactus mix & find SMALL pots 3-5" maximum diameter (plastic or terra cotta) & pot them into that into DRY MIX. I'd wait a few days before watering. I'd pull off any dead leaves &/or dry, brittle roots before potting up. Some folks here recommend sifting the Perlite first it to remove the finer particles & dust. Enjoy!...See MoreAloe Vera help please
Comments (6)Thanks for your help folks. I have repotted the mother today and separated some pups. They had a few roots on them so should I water them in a few days or wait a bit longer? https://photos.app.goo.gl/XBmmeZpCYO2R3WJD2 https://photos.app.goo.gl/WxlLki4jWzhTDMy82...See MoreDanielle Watson
