Does anyone have a Larix (Larch) of any kind?
Comments (22)Interesting, davidrt28. If you don't mind saying so, whereabouts are you located? My marschlinsii are planted in sandy loam which, as far as I've been able to discern, drains quite well, even though the field in question does slope down to a wetland area, and at least some of these larch are near that portion of the site. I'm inclined to think that for conifers generally, the land I happen to have purchased is exceedingly well-suited. Your comments regarding the current status of crosses leading to the Dunkeld-type trees pretty much mirrors one I've had with the guy up in Minnesota who, so far as I'm aware, is the only source for L. marschklinsii. In fact, he was going to cancel it off his list when seed availability became an issue, going so far as to inquire as to the sexual maturity of my trees. BTW, some cones are happening already. In any case, I'd asked him pretty much the very question as to whether the plants he was offering were really true Dunkeld larch, being several generations away from the initial cross. He took it pretty much in stride that these plants, even though now distant from that F1 generation, were still the genuine article. I like them but I'm not sure I agree with that assessment. Leastways for now, they continue to put on magnificent growth increments each year. My one caveat with these trees-they seem to have some trunk strength issues when very young. A freakish wind set up out of the north a couple years ago which managed to permanently bend some of these guys, including two or three which are now supine groundcover larch! But in the main, truly exceptional trees by my reckoning. A little aside: I wouldn't be terribly upset if at some point, my marschlinsii's were to cross with the nearby tamaracks in my woods. I don't know enough about synchronicity of flowering between the two, to know if this is even possible, but I find such thoughts intriguing, if a little opposed to the all-natives bible. +oM...See MoreAnyone know about park clean up projects?
Comments (5)I ran across that number but haven't tried it. I can be severely shy and tend to not be great at blind contact, but will give it a shot. It's not a big whoop project - I can take out invasives like a machine, lots of practice. There are church and social groups there often enough - very friendly, lots of great teenagers and I am absolutely positive they would help for a day. Okay so none of these people recognize me, they know my soccer playing Great Dane and call him by name, come ask him to play. There is button bush out the ears, serviceberry, it's beautiful. TONS and TONS of birds. Huge old oaks with a wall of kudzu 15' away. I can't stand it. The box elder is a work of art to me. I have until winter to arrange something, will work on it. Won't go through lakeside thickets this time of year. I know what lives there....See MoreDoes anyone have Bruce's Park Avenue flooring?
Comments (3)My friend put it in a condo remodel and it looks wonderful. The negative comments have been on the high shine. If you have it in an area with lots of sunlight its going to show every speck of dust etc, but that isn't a product issue as much as a design issue. Its about the best looking 'fake' wood product on the market and think you'll be pretty happy with it. Laminate like any flooring people sometimes have expectations set just a tad too high....See MoreDoes anyone have experience with a geriatric dog?
Comments (34)Wow, this thread took wings again! Let's see if I can answer. missymoo - we wonder, too, about the discomfort of being still. But as I said upthread, she stops the pacing when we're not paying attention to her. She was never a particularly active dog, so other than maybe being bored, I'm not sure it's discomfort. Yesterday DH was gone and I was puttering around the house. She landed in one of her favorite spots and was there the entire afternoon. tibbrix - We live in NC, so the water is really cold right now. I just don't think I could do that. I wouldn't want someone tossing me in a cold lake in February. And she hates water unless DH is in there with her. I don't think he'll go for that. :) mimi - the vet has done a bunch of range of motion and that type of testing. There haven't been any tests with machines or anything. She doesn't think the dementia is really an issue because of the dog's attentiveness, being in-the-moment when she's there, etc. She said there is still a lot going on upstairs, and there are no other symptoms of dementia. We have her on pain management drugs, which are limited because she is also on Prednisone, which means she can't take NSAIDS. She's also on a supplement and fish oil for arthritis. I will look into the PAWS, that might help some. starsplitter - we have not used glucosamine/chondroitin for this dog, although we gave to another dog years ago. I'd have to ask and research it, it might not work with the Prednisone. The Pred is for a chronic liver ailment, and is keeping that well controlled. She only get 5mg every other day, so super low dosage, but long term. Thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions and words of advice. We've never had a dog live this long, so we're in new territory....See Moreflowergirl70ks
