Can my azaleas be saved?
Comments (2)Can you make a raised bed somewhere in your garden with a lot of peat moss and some triple mix soil? Try not to mix in the clay- it will filter in eventually anyway though as your bed is settling down. This is what seems to work for me anyway in my 100% clay base. The south side with afternoon sun doesn't sound good at all either. Azaleas like morning and midday sun, and not too much of it either. They do well in shade as well, even though they don't have so many flowers there for me as the ones which get direct sunlight. Comments (3)Wayne, Plant both! Here in SE MI, 'Herbert' and 'Karens' have been rock solid. As Waplummer mentioned, up here the "evergreen" azaleas are actually "semi". No matter, they put on new foliage in the spring and look good until the very dead of January. The deciduous azaleas have several things going for them, in my opinion: 1. Many of them have large trusses in outrageous colors. 2. Most of them can grow quite tall, even at my latitude. 3. They are smart enough to drop their leaves in the fall, thereby avoiding winter desiccation. If you like the look of evergreen azaleas, consider also the lepidotes--small-leaved rhodies. Many are very cold hardy, and have foliage similar to the evergreen azaleas. This spring I put in 'Olga Mezzit', 'Faisa', April Snow', and 'Landmark'. All are doing great, and my local rhodie veterans give them a thumbs-up for cold-hardiness. A.J....See MoreBlue Azalea
Comments (8)I've grown both 'Starry Night' and 'Blue Baron'(which has 'Starry Night' as one of its parents). Both plants have striking flowers although neither is really blue. 'Starry Night' lingered for a number of years, but was never really happy and never looked as good as it did at the nursery. I still have 'Blue Baron' which is something of a challenge. It needs considerable sun to set flower buds, but requires shade in the winter to avoid bark split and dessication. Two years ago many nurseries throughout New England had large numbers of beautifully grown, blooming 'Blue Barons' for sale. Unfortunately, they were labeled as Z5 hardy which they most definitely are not. I'm sure a ton of them were sold, but I doubt if a very high percentage are still alive. My own two have grown well but have never shown the luxuriant bloom the ones in the nurseries exhibited. If you're in a cool mountain area of WV, I'd say both are worth a try - the species r. russatum is in both, so heat is not to their liking. Winter shade and protection from drying winds is important....See MoreRhododendron Plant Sale at Jenkins, near Valley Forge, PA
